weak #4
« on: August 19, 2005, 06:15:24 PM »
my honda's #4 cylinder isn't firing regulary. after the other pipes are hot to the touch the #4 is warm at the top. after a ride  its hot at the top but less and less warm as you go down.

spark caps, wires and coils(used) have been replaced. the #4 wire sparks bright when plug is exposed.

carbs have been dipped cleaned and rebuilt

In the past three months or so, there have been times when the #4 pipe has been hot like the rest. even today, there are times when the pipe matches the heat of the others; and the bike sounds much better. I took off the pods I had built and put the factory airbox back on so settings could be matched as closely as possible.

ignition static timed, points set.

tappets were set last evening using the "go, no go" method  :)

I haven't checked compression, but visual inspection of head and juggs didn't show any warping, but then I wear glasses.

would poor compression account for the sometimes hot/not situation?

all of this may be moot, as earlier this evening I heard some clacking idling in the driveway. shut it off right after something grabbed. I turned the crank about a half rotation  in the opposite direction, too pissed to crack the thing open just yet.

a recap:

intermittent fourth cylinder. engine surges and searches mid range, bogs beyond midrange. cannot top 5K rpm.

Would like to see a compression test.

Have you syncronized the carbs with manometers?

It could be compression but I would look at it being a valve causing comp loss since it does not always happen. But I just dont think compression is the issue. I think it is carb related. pull your #4 when this happens and see what it looks like. I had something like this and I ran WAY rich. So check that and make sure tappets are adjusted correctly and check the sync.
