Holy Crap! When did this happen!
« on: August 19, 2005, 06:52:28 PM »
I guess I got so caught up with everything I've been doing (including working on this bike) that I didn't realize how far I'd gotten.

1976 CB750
frame chopped and tweaked to play host to a 2000-something HONDA CBR1000RR exhaust.  Engine got new gaskets and seals all around, seat went under the knife, new, smaller taillight nested under the seat, and there are still more treats to come.

Please let me know what you guys think!

I chopped up both a 600RR and a 1000RR to get the pipes to fit right.  I still need to replace the coils/wires and hook up the rear signals, but most everything else is cosmetic...
-seat is getting reupholstered right now
-some older clip-ons
-lower profile headlight brackets
-fabricate new mounts for rear passenger pegs
-exhaust wrap and heat shields for near rear pegs
-bracket for mounting plate underneath the muffler
-splashguard for inside the frame (battery and electricals are still exposed to wheel splash)
-H4 system
-new paint for frame and tank

I pray to God that the CBR1000RR you cut up was beyond all hope.

I have to tell you right out...There is something wrong with the rear end of that bike.

I dont know if it is that wacky exhaust or the fact that the rear wheel is ...

I just dont know.

I am not one to piss on ones camp fire but...that is just not right.

Post some pics after the the cosmetic is done...I am very interested is the finished product.

if you like it than I am cool with it. After all...I is YOUR bike. Build and ride it your way.

I don't think I'd appreciated all that hot exhaust  vacating the bike right under  my butt on a 95' day. My butt generates enuf' heat on it's own! ;D

Great concept try I guess but it just doesn't look right to me.  I'd like to see the finished product.  One issue is the HOT seat your going to get.  The newer bikes are designed for it, not re-fitted for it.  Great vision though.  keep the pics coming.

It's different, I'll give you that. Looks better than mine also. At least you don't have to worry about scraping the muffler around turns, right? Looks like you have a lot of work into it. Will it go as fast as it looks? peace, michel

Actually, she doesn't get that hot.  I just got back from a ride (maybe an hour or so), and the heat near the seat is not very noticable.  The can does get warm, but I think she was tuned a little rich, and isn't running that hot period.  The exhaust pipework is actually pretty unrestricted, but the photos don't show the size of the tubes or how they flare near the bends to compensate.  Everything is centered on the rear end, clearances check out everywhere, and there is definitely enough space between the seat and the muffler to keep the heat issue to a minimum.  The only problem I see is the issue of heat from the exhaust pipes heating up my oil.  The pipes lie right next to the oil tank, and although right now I have a large piece of fiberglass insulation padding wrapped around the pipe (the padding was from the CBR as well), I want to do a exhaust wrap and install an oil cooler just to play it safe.  I agree that the bike just doesn't right, and I think I will attribute that to the fact that this was a pretty big change.  I mean seriously, who the hell puts a exh. sys. from such a modern, high-performance bike onto a 30 yr. old bike found in a barn?!  Well, I guess I do...oh well.  I'm having fun, and the bike still runs/rides great.  I'll post more pics as I get them.

I don't like it, but for the simple reason that I don't like the new trend of hiding the exhausts under the seat. I love those thick exhausts pointing back-upwards on the side of the bikes, be it a sportbike, a cruiser or a naked bike. The only reason to hide them is when you have a single-arm rear swingarm, so the exhaust hinder the sight of the naked wheel. Even then, the exhaust can play a design role (like in the MV Agusta Brutale). The exhausts contribute in the line flow of the bike design (IMO)

Nice mods!   If some guys can't dig it that's their hang-up. All of our bikes have blood and sweat put into them, you've just taken it to a higher level. Very nice, I can't wait to see it completed. 8)

Oops, sorry about that, just another uncontrollable shudder. Er, very um, nice...... ? Cheers, Terry. :P :-[ :-X

LOL!!! Terry, that third stone is making you a man very unpleasant to deal with. On the contrary, my only stone has made me a weak man to the eyes of my fellow americans. I'll rush to buy you those magazines; I hope this forum will be a more peaceful place when the balance have been recovered (seriously, I have to walk leaning towards the left HAHAHAHAH)

I too got a shudder looking at the rear end of that machine. I am not saying that it is a bad idea...I just want to hold off on my...there is something wrong with the ass of that bike.

I know that he has put a lot of time in it...and I  REALLY respect that....but I think that the pipes stick out to far...and the antique rear wheel setup is...well...out of place like it is.

I really want to see the finished product. I frowned everytime I looked at my pile before it started to take shape.

Tires man...that things needs tires.

I might want to pull the rear wheel back a 1/2 a foot or so...

It's a neat concept, not very pretty right now but I imagine most test pieces don't look all that good at first.

One thing I am confused about is that it looks like you have a motorcycle catylitic converter in there. I don't know if the cbr came with them stock (something tells me they didn't) but if that is what I think it is - Why?

I think if you keep working at it you will get it right, these things take time to perfect.

The reason modern sport bikes went to undertail exhaust is to look like the race bikes. The reason race bikes went to an undertail is to increase the conering clearance and to move weight closer to the centerline of the bike. With your offset system I don't think you have accomplished either of these goals, though it probably doesn't matter on a 500lbs bike with 58hp. Call me crazy but I think you need to reinforce the rear section of that frame.

Judging from the amount of work that has gone into it so far, me thinks a box aluminum swingarm with a space for the exhaust to pass through (like modern sportbikes) would have been a better way to go for packaging.

So does this system increase hp? or is it a no-go showboat?

I haven't gotten the bike dynoed since the engine has been finished, but it has definitely got a lot more pep than it used to.  I hope the hp went up a little but if it didn't, then oh well.  Some people like the look of a restored bike, others the look of faired or luggaged up bikes.  I like cafe racers, and I am about 99.999% sure this has never been done to a cb750 before, so I guess thats the main reason for its existence.

I think I probably looked just like that when I saw it too, man that take some getting used to! I bought that Suzuki GS1000G on the weekend from the wrecking yard, the previous owner, a young "Streetfighter Artiste" had lost a sidecover and objected to paying 50 bucks for a replacement item, so he made his own out of aluminum checker-plate, which he fastened directly onto the frame with "tek-screws"!

He then painted them on the frame with a rattle can of black enamel. He must have had some checker plate left, so he made some round(ish) discs outta the stuff and glued them to the points and alternator covers with silicon sealant, then of course, painted the whole shooting match while they were on the engine! Yum-eeeeee!

He was so busy "customising" the bike that he neglected to put any oil in the final drive or differential, which accounted for the noise emanating from the tranny. Interestingly enough, I was expecting leaks after I refilled these items, but so far, not a drop. Maybe he liked that "Gear Whine", it does sound kinda "rad"!

I'm only glad that he left the engine alone, although he did take the carbs off to paint them all flat black, and managed to lose the spring for the idle adjustment screw, so of course he just left it out. That explained why the bike would either conk out at intersections, or idle at 10,000 RPM, depending on which way the screw turned with engine vibes as you rode along. Ah well, it could have been worse, he could have butchered a 750/4! Cheers, Terry. ;D

I gotta give anyone credit for having the stones to fabricate something themselves outa thier garage, I think its a cool concept, and the seat looks super nice!  It takes a lot more effort to make all that stuff work than it does to order a mac or kerker from a catalog!

you know whats bizarre about your ride?  the way the seat kicks up so much.  throw a solo on there... let the pipes hang out like you want them too.  and the seat won't look so freekin goofy.
