Preferred aftermarket exhaust systems for the CB750
« on: May 11, 2008, 12:00:22 PM »
What are the most popular brands of replacement exhaust systems for the CB750? The stock pipes on my '78 are okay, but they are showing their age, and I want to eventually upgrade.

I have read mixed opinions on Mac systems. Budget wise, I'd like to get set up for less than $300 -$350. (am I dreaming?)

Then comes the electronic iginition!

I bought a set of Mac 4 into 1's. mostly because I got a really good deal. there isn't much else out there as far as new.

as far as the Mac pipes go. I like the way they look, but there are some flaws. the head pipes don't sit flush to the engine. it's weird but you can still see half of the screw because you can only screw them in so far. I thought I had them on wrong but I guess that's how they're supposed to go. looks kinda half assed. there is already a bubble in the chrome that flaked off. and the paint was already chipped in a few places out of the box. so they have a #$%*ty paint and chrome job but they seem to work well. I think I'm going to try and find something else, eventually. most likely used. hope that helps ya a little.

i think the macs are a good option:  got a used set and they fit well, are light, have a removeable baffle and are easily modified:  i took out the baffle, shortened the end can 4inches by cutting a  slash-cut and shortened the baffle too.  sounds fine w/baffle and really fine open.  i paint 'em yearly 'cause the rust is coming back.  will get another set someday when these are toast.  think you can get a new set for about $276 from chaparral or jc whitney or somebody.  i forget. :P

I didn't mean to say they suck cuz it kinda sounds that way. they're actually really great as far as sound and feel, they seem solid and whatnot. it's easy to get the baffles out if you want, too. it's just a crappy paint job. which is no biggie if you don't mind a few touch ups. and that weird screw thing. for the price I paid they're pretty good, actually.

jemco man.  hand formed, matches the original yoshi hand bents.  but i think for your price range, they're a bit too much.  about 450 shipped from houston.  about a week or two lead time.  do a google search for jemco exhaust to see some pictures of his work.  super high quality and amazing performance.  let us know what you end up getting, no pics = no exhaust!!!

There are probably more MAC systems on older bikes than any other system for two reason: #1.) MAC makes the pipes; #2.) They're cheap.

Reason #1 you really can't argue with too much. A lot of companies just won't make a pipe for a 30+ year old bike. I personally don't care for MACs. I would buy a Kerker for twice the price any day, but I'd be getting three times the pipe, so it kind of works out. :)

I put chrome MAC 4-1s on my K6 about 10 years ago (about 300 back then) and have been happy with them although I've not put a lot of miles on them.  I have discolored them near the head but am otherwise pretty happy.  I'm about to move them to my K8 to make room for my new HM341s.  My K7 is a good candidate for the Cyclexchange 4-2-1 pipes ;)

if he could hand bend them with the one continuous curve i would buy them but those look more like the mac headers then the yoshs i like.

The Yoshi's i have seen come with 2 different bends......the nice rounded bent ones and the more normal ones.....I think Terry has the later....i prefer the rounded ones.

Hey BG, how do you like that x-pipe?  I was thinking about fabbing something like that up with my stock headpipes, but couldn't decide what diameter to use at the X.  Then I bought a 4-1 and it fell by the wayside. Does it have a more even sound?  ???

I think a lot of people would like more "ass stats" on the X pipe ;D

I like the X-pipe, for the sheer fact that no one out here in the midwest (that I have seen) is running one.  It does have a very unique note, check out my build thread for video (once it warms up I will post better video).

Dr. Campbell (X-Pipe) sent me the wrong damn pipe (DOHC instead of the SOHC), I waited for almost a year and a half with pipes sitting in my garage before trying to fit the exhaust to the bike so I just hacked it up and made it fit to my tastes.  The pipe is cheaply made (super thin pipes) but I like the balanced look and fitment now.

If I had it do over again, I would have done a before and after with stock and aftermarket pipes to see the performance differences.  I had a ton of engine work done, so can't really tell is the pipe makes that big of a difference or it was the engine work.  I love the pipes seaweb11 got from Yamiya in black of course for my bike, and am/was waiting for a set of hand bent pipes from 736cc even sent Andy a set of exhaust flanges?  It was the look and the oddity factor that influenced me with the X-Pipe, along with the horsepower increase claims.....
