Headlight/starter/horn problem?
« on: May 26, 2008, 06:16:26 PM »
Ok so last week, i put some decided to do a overhaul on the front end of my 74 550. All came out well with the exception of a few things. When dissembling the starter/throttle assembly, i noticed the switch for the starter inside was destroyed. When i reassembled i tried to hot glue some things and such, no luck. So i am kick starting at this point. The other things i noticed was that my headlight did not work anymore. The ground is good but from my blue and white wires I'm barely getting any voltage. 2v's tops. Also i noticed a fuse for my horn was blown, so when i put the fuse back in my horn was stuck in the on position. So it is just constantly going off. Not fun. I am sure something is shorted out somewhere a long the line, but im not sure where.  Any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance

The starter button turns off the headlight when it is pressed.

So, the bad starter switch may not route power to the headlight fuse as it should, hence no headlight.

Stock bikes don't have a horn dedicated fuse.  So, I can't help with unknown wiring/mods.

Get yourself a wire diagram and figure out what should go where.

Well then i guess my next question is, where can i purchase a new starter assembly?  Can i just buy the switch assembly or do i need to buy the entire control housing?

The switch seems to be unique to Honda.  And, Honda only sells it with the entire control pod.
Used/ebuy is a possibility.

If I have all the pieces from the old switch, I can rebuild them.  But, it's not exactly an easy thing to do.
