how tight?
« on: May 12, 2008, 02:38:54 PM »
hey all, finally replaced my steering head berings on the 550. i esed an All Balls tapered set. wwas easier and went smoother than i thought. i have everythiong back together, but was wondering how tight does the adjudting nut have to be?(the one you use the spanner wrench on). how tight should the lower tree be? it's smooth side to side just a little stiff. thanxs, carl

Even my 750KO manual does not tell me how tight for the steering head.  So I went with my CM400 manual for the balls.  Says hand tighten while moving the triple tree back and forth a few times.  Then hand tighten as much as you can without the wrench (hand tight) and then back off 1/8th to 1/4th turn.  I would go with this unless someone on the board has a 550 manual that gives actual specs.

I don't think I've seen specs for that nut.  It would be difficult to get a torque wrench on that.  I always tighten it until the front end will no longer fall all the way to the stop by itself (front end jacked up, of course), and then loosen it back until it will.  Then check again after a couple of hundred miles and tighten as needed.
