honda shadow vt1300

Well,
At least it's a SOHC!
My buddy's having some issues w/ his VT1300.  I have a feeling he's just lugging it in 5th and being a lil' paranoid but maybe not?

I posted some Q's over @ www.hondashadow.net and haven't got a single response.

Anyone here have much experience w/ the newer Honda cruisers?

My friend (He's been a long time Honda owner and MC rider.) just got a 07 VT1300C. All stock, right off the showroom floor.

So far it's given him a little trouble right from the start. The dealer has been helpful but we're try'n to figure out some of the lingering issues.

From his description it sounds like he's getting some pre-ignition or other pinging/rattle when shifting into 5th @ ~55mph @ approx 4500-5000 rpm. I say approx because there's no tach!  :o I kinda wonder why Honda chose to leave off a $100 part that is really helpful to have ( more helpful than a speedo if you ask me  :P ) Anyway, enough whining  :) we're going to get a tach soon and then I can give a closer figure.

He says it seems to get better with slightly higher rpms. I believe he also stated the manual suggest shifting to 5th ~45-50MPH, and he says it sounded like it was about the right rpm to shift.

Anyhow, he says it's a pretty awful racket a mix between a ping and a ratttle if you know what I mean!  ::) He has just been down shifting and trying to only use 5th for really high speeds for right now.

Please help me with any info or experience you may have about any similar symptoms.

Thanks in advance
