I've had that happen on various bikes.  I find it gets worse when the oil hasn't been changed in a while.  Also, during longer rides, sometimes my shifting becomes a little lazy, so those false neutrals become more common.

MY 550 does this on occasion if I give it a weak #$%*, generally between 2-3.

I once had a false neutral light, if that's what you mean.  Neutral light on when in fact it was still in gear.  Glad I had a fist full of brake when I let the clutch go!!

If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

yes me too, especially 3-4, I put it down to lazy/fast shifting, I was thinking of adjusting the linkage so lever is lower down, my ankles aren't as manouverable as they were  ;)
edbikerii - your comment about oil needed changing is interesting as mine appears to have got worse with time.

Try riding my MotoGuzzi. It has 5 gears, and 7 neutrals....

I never have false neutrals on my '76 550F. But it only has 53000 miles on it, so the gearbox is probably as good as new.  ;)
Sometimes after standing in the rain it doesn't want to downshift from 2nd to 1st, but I think it's because i'm too lazy to oil the clutchcable.

I have noticed that on long rides or when the motor is running hot.
My clutch gets grabby when the motors gets running really hot, so I start shifting more slowly and deliberately after noticing the clutch acting up.
On the highway it's hard to notice, but in city driving it's obvious when the clutch starts doing that.
I live with it.

Thats on my '79cb650.

Ya my 78 550 does the same thing.  Say I have the bike on the rear stand and am switching gears, I have to turn the tire a bit to get it to shift.  The 350 I had would switch no matter what.

Loose tolerances on the shifting drum, shifting forks and gears. All add up to false neutrals. When you get a chance to see a transmission up close on one of these bikes you will see how this can happen  ;),
