Where do all these bolts go?
« on: May 13, 2008, 06:12:05 AM »
I bought a stainless steel bolt kit to replace teh soft factory engine case bolts that I destroyed getting my engine apart.  Now I can't figure out which length goes in which hole.  My Haynes manual does not give any measurements on bolt length per hole.  I have a '77 CB400f.  Any ideas on where I can get a bolt length schematic?

If you can't find a schematic, I'd recommend laying out the bolts, sorted by length. Then as you take the screws out of the engine, just match the length up, and put that bolt in...
Hope this helps!  ;)

With the bolt just sitting in the hole the head should be about 1/4 to 3/8 above the case. You could also go to service honda or honda parts direct and look at the diagrams the dimensions are usually in the description.

Try here:

And navigate to your bike.  The page you are looking for is "crankcase"

if i can't figure out what i've got, i take the depth measuring end of my calipers and put in into the hole to measure it's total depth. this way you can make sure you don't put too long a bolt in and bottom it out.

Destroyer just remember to use never seize on all the bolts or you are in for a real bad time. Send the stainless bolts back and get a alloy bolt kit or buy them sepratly from a good race store it will be better for the bike in the long run.Brent

Yes on the never seize.  I wouldn't leave home without it.  Other than possible torque differences, what are the negatives to stainless bolts?  I would think anything is better then those mushy stock crappers.

I've not heard of anyone recommending against the stainless bolt kits.  Why would they be a problem with antisieze on them?
