Topic: moding 650 forks

Hello all I have a odd question. Are CB550 and 650 forks the same length. And will the upper 550 tubes fit in the 650 bottom tube. Thanx for the replies Brent

from what i have read the 650 forks are longer by about 25mm, but at this time i have no tangible proof to base this on. but i have a set of 650 forks on the way for my 550 as soon as i get the i may just experiment

I thought that I had read on here that the 650 forks were longer than the 550 forks. That is why I want to put the 550 sliders inthe 650 bottoms.  For those that are wondering I want to put to put comstares on the 550

thats what i am doing to min, i pick the wheels up  here locally but the forks ar e bay items

If they are the same diameter I don't see why not.
I am currently running '79 cb650 upper tubes, and '79750(dohc) lowers for the dual disk setup.
For me everything went well with that swap.

Interesting finding another 650 owner named Brent though...

Also I have progressive springs for the 550 forks and want to know if I can use them in the swap. I don't no why I couldn't but I thought i would ask while I am on here. And to Soos Brent is a rare name. Nice to see a fellow SOHC4 member with it. Thanx Brent

yeah i thought it was rare... until I moved to utah.
have met about 10 in the last 4 years.
NONE in any other state.

if the 650 tube length is 25mm longer than the 550, then your springs would then be 25mm shorter than design. would seem to be easy to then fit a 25mm preload on top so you can use those progressive springs. as to what would be better, a stack of washers/spacer or another spring such as a valve spring, greater minds than mine would know that answer, either way I say yes
