Dead.
« on: May 14, 2008, 11:56:10 AM »
As I was coming home from my ride last night, my bikes power was sputtering.  This is because of a loose wire near the ignition.  I had previously ziptied the bottom plug into the top, for a tighter connection.  I made it home, and made a note to inspect it today.

I went out today, turn the ignition to on, and get nothing.  Wiggle the plug underneath the ignition, and got nothing (this usually works..).  Checked fuses, nothing amiss. Normally when I wiggle the wires, I can get a response, even if it wont stay on, but now I am getting nothing.  I dont know that much about tracing electrical problems, so im confused.  Any ideas??  I know this is vague but im pretty upset right now...

Just get a new ignition. One that does not require zip ties and wiggling ;D ;D

Do you have a multi-meter?  or even a test light?  First, make sure the battery didn't drain itself dry.  Then start looking at that switch to see if you can get the connections lined up properly.  You may have to just buy a new one.

If you don't have a test light, make one with a couple of wires and a 12v bulb.  This will at least let you know if you have any power at all.

Seaweb has it, sorta.  Here, let me answer my own question and help any other people out.

OK, noob, take off your headlight by undoing the mounting bolts on either side.  This will make it easy to get at the ignition and the wires.  First unplug the main electrical plug in by pressing the 2 prongs on the underside together and pulling out.  Then, if you look closely, there are 3 slots around the outside of the ignition cylinder that hold tabs that hold the guts in place.  Push in on all three and drop out out the guts.

NOW HERE IS YOUR PROBLEM: the contacts in the ignition are probably really dirty, so take it apart and clean all the contacts with a scotchbrite or sandpaper.  When you take yours apart, narcoticrex, you moron, you will see that when you have been telling people about the ziptie fix, you have been giving faulty info.  This is because this puts undue pressure on the top half of the plastic parts inside, especially with vibration and bumps, and will cause the plastic to crack and the tiny piece of metal that is riveted in will move ever so slightly and not allow a good contact.

SO, if you are having problems with your bike randomly shutting off due to loss of electrical power, CLEAN THE CONTACTS IN THE IGNITION, THEY ARE REALLY EASY TO GET TO.  Dont rely on some shady ziptie fix, you may crack the "cheap" parts in the ignition that have managed to last 30+ years without being cleaned or serviced in any other way!
