Handle Bars, Wires, & Signals
« on: May 19, 2008, 07:15:06 AM »
I rebuilt my LH switch this weekend on my 77' 750K and thought of running the wires down through (inside) the handle bars to clean up the look. But the connector that is in the bucket that handles the lions share of the LH switch wires will not fit through the bars.

Has someone else dealt with this? How did you do it?

Also, I was shopping at the local Motorcycle supply place and was going to purchase the cool little signals that look like they are made out of carbon fiber (similar to the ones you see on e-bay). But on the back I read that these are not "DOT" approved. WHAT!
I have seen these on other bikes, and apparently no issue with local law enforcement?

The wire bundles that come out of the controls route into the bars under the control housings and out the center under the bar stay clamp.  then down into the headlight bucket to connect to the rats nest.

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=7769.0 is all about how to do this with minimal frustration.  If you got the bike with externally routed control wires, chances are the bars are not drilled for wiring and the control housings have been notched- if so you have to drill and fill to have everything internally routed and water tight.

It's a disclaimer, because for some reason(ie: not large enough, not visible from certain angles) they dont pass the DOT's tests. It's slapped on there so that in case it's found that an accident was caused because someone couldn't see the signal, the signal manufacturer can't be held liable. That being said, the local cops probably won't pull you over for them, unless you get some guy that really wants to pick your bike apart....If you like 'em, run 'em. Hope this helps!
