CB750K7 Project
« on: December 14, 2009, 04:23:27 PM »
I've decided to make a "build thread" in a way. I'm not doing a massive amount of work, but enough to warrant documentation (if only for myself).

I tore the bike down this spring and lost a bit of steam. I'm justing back around to working on it.

It started a stock '77 CB750K. I'm giving it the ol' cafe treatment.

As of now its torn down a bit and chillin' on a cart (works great). Wheels are getting new spokes and powder coated. new seat is here (thanks classiccyclecity!) and about ready for paint as is the tank, side covers, headlight bucket and chopped front fender.

A few pics taken with my cell phone, I'll break out the nice camera one of these days...
It's definitely pretty dusty and dirty from over spray and all sorts of other fun but I'm hoping she'll clean up nice for me.

I took out the battery box today sand blasted and primed it. To get to it I had to pull most of the electrical parts. I noticed this guy isn't looking to sharp. I would assume it works, it did a year ago, but it's certainly not in the best shape. Should I replace it? or run it until she gives up. Oh, and what is it? ???

I'm also kind of curious about this...

The tank before primer...

And the newly "chopper front fender sitting on my pop's 78K

More soon.

3rd last pic is your rectifier.

Have you downloaded a manual with wiring diagram?

I haven't, but I have the clymer for the bike. I'm pretty sure it has wiring diagrams.

I knew that was the rectifier and I'm guessing the rusted can is the starter solenoid.

Got a little bit of work done today. Primed most of the body panels. Pulled the front end apart and began cleaning the steering bearings (what a mess).

Tried the DA...gave up and sandblasted it.

After some primer and black rusto

Blasted and painted the battery box.

My father and I did something pretty cool with the triple clamp. He (and others I'm sure) that have straight or club man style bars know all about being careful about how far you turn your bars. So we drilled and tapped the clamp in order to put a screw in to make the turning stop a bit larger.

I also ran into a slight issue with the new seat. It's seems to have been made with the rear fender in mind. Makes complete sense; however, I'm not big into the rear fender and haven't used it since the day I bought the bike. A few pictures can kind of explain whats going on. I'm thinking of cutting the frame off way back and bending a round pipe around under the seat. Any thoughts?

That is a fairly common mod for "cafe" style bikes ....cut and bend away.... ;D

Would you (do they) bend the pipe hot or cold? Has anyone tutorial'd the process?

It may be easier to get a piece of appropriately sized pipe bent by some one that has pipe benders. Have a look in the "project" section of the forum, most cafe bikes on here have a similar mod. Sorry but mine is un modded..

The screws in the steering stops is an oft mentioned but seldom done mod. Nice forethought, I'm sure you already know what an important detail it is.
