How many SOHC 4's were sold?
« on: May 12, 2008, 11:23:27 AM »
After a discussion on another forum about a 1934 Brough Superior SS100 that recently sold at auction for a massive £166,500. Someone suggested my 350F might be worth that when it's 74 years old  ... of course it won't ever be worth even a tenth of that as only 6 of the  Brough Superior SS100 models were ever made, plus it was a special "superbike" model of the day - unlike the 350F.

However it did get me wondering how may little 350Fs are out there. I think there must be a few hundred thousand. Anyone know how many were made??

I'd also be interested to know how many of the other SOHC4's were made of course some had more than one model (like the 400/4 and the 750/4).

I think I know where 2 are (1 might be the auction bike)

Cant tell you on the little Honda 4,s but in 750,s it is at least 400,000 units (all yrs & models)

Well, there had to be more than 6 SS100's made- since Lawrence of Arabia supposedly had 7 of them!  :)

Luckily, I got to see one in person at a museum exhibit earlier this year:  ;D

I think the SOHC 750s from 1969 to 1978 was almost a million units.

Didn't someone post something about how the 750 outsold all the other SOHC4s combined by a ratio of more than 2:1?

It was something like 800,000 750s built and the production of 350/400/500/550/650 combined was 350,000.  Or something...

Wouldn't be surprised. I guess the 350 had the shortest production time???? Just 3 years 72-74. Not sure about the other models. I know the 400 didn't last much longer, not sure about the 650. The 500 must have been longer????

Dunno, but I thought someone might!

Cb350 1972-74 3 years
Cb500 1971-73  3 years
Cb550 1974- 78  4 years (but the 77 and 78 were both K3 models.)  I'm guessing the 650 wasn't quite ready yet.
CB550F 1975-77  3 years
Cb400 1975-77  3 years.
CB650 1979-82  3 years
Cb750 19who cares??

I was mistaken according to ClassicBikes.com:

In a market previously dominated by smaller-displacement singles and twins, Honda introduced a large-displacement, transverse, air-cooled, inline four-cylinder and as suddenly the 1969 class of one. American Honda sold 400,000 units in a 10 year-run.

In 1973 sales figures soared, more than 60,000 CB750s were sold in one single year, a number that's simply unheard of in today's street bike market.
