How big is Sufficient??
« on: May 18, 2008, 08:16:34 PM »
How big a motor is needed to get your butt down the road??

Was at a bike show today, someone told me about a dual carb 124 ci there.. turns out I know the guy and worked on his brake bracket a week ago..

Had not seen him in a while and we never got to talking about his motor.. so I did not know he had gone that big..

Now i know there are 156 ci out there and maybe bigger , but how much do you need??

Working it out in my head comes out to about 2000 cc or a bit more.. geez and I am thinking if I go to half of that it should be enough... :o

Manm they sure make em huge these days.. remember when 1000cc was huge...lol..

I know a guy in the Bikers Who Care who dropped a small block Chevy V-8 Corvette engine into his hog (I think it was a Dyna at one point).  It's heavy as hell and pretty fugly, but damn it's fast!

My wife and I toured Goa, India on a Yamaha RD250.  Served us pretty well, although we were almost bikenapped by a very large monkey.

;D ;D ;D ::)
iv never ridden anything larger than a 1200 sporty.as a minimum for me the 550 would be pushing it on long trips...especially in southern and eastern Ontario (maniac drivers here who feel 140 km ph  is slow)i'm more comfortable on a 750 on the hwy.
on long trips to cottage country here i take the old back hwy's on the 550.
im sure it was posted on this site last year that a woman from China was touring the world on a 350 or slightly larger.only problems she had was accidents and breakdowns.

I saw a guy in Banff one year coming back from an ALCAN ride..

He was on a CT70   :o   :o

We were both heading west, all the way to the snowsheds I was worrying that I would  run over him in one or see him flattened out like a sailcat in one of them..

Bet he got a bigger bike after that trip..

125 maybe.. ???

There's a thing in NSW called the "postie bash" - so called because the post office use CT100s or 110s
this ride leaves sydney & travels to darwin, a couple of thousand kays across Australia
at the end the bikes (or what's left go to charity)

When you look at it from a "Horsepower to Weight Ratio" point of view, a CB750 with average sized rider has roughly the same power as a Corvette.  So even a very small motorcycle will easily get you in the same power neighborhood as the average sedan.

Isn't it all a juxtaposition about "look at the size of my manhood?"

That may be but a 124 inch V-twin, looks a lot like a 88 inch..

At Bonneville there was a 156ci twin, a W-3 Fueling  which has 3 cylinders, and Roger said, Do you realize I still went faster than most of them on my single? . (Harley based  single)

Down in Fla this winter I saw a Boss Hoss with a supercharger kit!!! Can you say insane?!?!?

In terms of getting me where I need to go my CNR has plenty of get up and go....but I long for something a little more comfortable on long highway rides. I would love to grab my brother's Dyna. It has an 88inch motor so like 1340 I think ? Has lots of hwy torque.

Although I gotta say when I merge onto the 401 at around 150kmh and realize I am still only in 3rd gear I realize that my CBR has way more to give than I will use!!

My first bike, a CB175, took me everywhere I wanted to go: commuting, camping, taking the girlfriend out for rides to secluded places....... Admittedly the distances weren't as great in England as here in this fair land, but I cannot ever remember feeling insecure on it or being blown around by other traffic or strong winds.

Maybe I'm looking at history through the proverbial rose coloured glasses.....?

Now my CB250....that was a BIG bike.

Made a few  bits for that 124 ci today.

Merch engine, originally they were built in Alberta. He used to offer a 130 ci package for dressers!

It has raised decks, makes it a lot stronger when you got a liter per hole or bigger.. has those push-in compresssion releases, sure makes it start easy.. has a pair of Edelbrock carbs, manifold and aircleaners look like Weber stuff.

Lots of hopped-up bikes around here.. :D

You're right Sam. But riding into London every week to go to college was always 'entertaining'.
