Part of the weight is on the dragging boot -and maybe even in the handlebar. I guess the rider put a foot down and start leaning. With a third point of contact, a high part of the weight is not on the wheels so they don't have to trade centrifugal force for available traction. It is the only possible explanation I can think of....

.... or the picture was taken while standing still.

The medic in me just sees that left leg up under the handlebar, and starts thinking about how many ways that could hurt if he went down... :o

There was a feature on that guy a few months ago in one of the bike mags over here, he's Spanish from memory, and definitely a member of the win it or bin it brigade 8)

On a similar note, did anyone see some of the shots of Reuben Xaus at the launch of the Ducati Supermoto? Sideways bike, one knee on the ground, one arm in the air :o

Some years ago, an Italian World Champion road racer called Luigi Taveri was well known for wearing the makers name off the side of his tires and they said people on the outside of turns could clearly see the underside of his oil pan. Google his name for more.

If somebody has to google "Luigi Taveri" is either very young or very new into motorcycles.... or not much interested in the "continental circus".

This leads me to a question that has been lingering in my mind for a while, and probably you oldbiker can give some help. We have seen those amazing rear-wheel controled skid of the pro-racers to take turns. American racers who had a background on dirt track racing seem to excel on that technique. The question is: is it really worthwhile? Cranking the gas mid-turn help to change the trajectory of the bike without increasing the lean angle. That seems like a good thing. But you are wearing the tires and, I feel, loosing speed. If the wheel is not rolling you are losing speed. Wouldn't it be better to choose a better trajectory that allows to maximize speed without having to skid the wheel?

It never seemed to slow Nicky Hayden down any in his Championship year Raul 8)

Not as much as being given a sh!t bike to defend said championship did anyway ::)

Raul, towards the end of the 'Manx Norton' era a lot of the top riders were 'drifting' the rear end but I can't say I saw any significant improvement in lap times. Personally I only found it useful if I had gone in a little hot and it allowed me to tighten up the turn enough to miss the outside of the track. The tyres then were not as good or controllable as they are now. We got more grip in the turns from the triangular profile tyres but I never felt really happy with the transition from upright to full lean. It was neccessary to DROP the bike in quite sharply and best speed was always obtained from smooth riding.
