Hello to all!

I stumbled across this site while searching for info/parts for my 1978 CB750K (see attached pic).  After reading a post on how to fix broken side covers (of which I have two pair) and reading the advice and techniques from other members (some of which I'll try), I decided to sign up.

A little about my bike: I bought it from my older brother, who rode it for 2 summers then let it sit for 3 years...it ran, and I paid $200 for it.  That was four years ago, while I was still finishing college.  I've done a little restoration work to it since then (brakes, sprockets&chain, fixed the turn signals, replacing the chrome parts) but nothing too involved yet.  I plan on buying a house this fall, so I'll finally have a place to really go to work on it.

Anyway, thanks for letting me join, and I look forward to learning a lot!

Welcome from upstate NY! She looks like she's in pretty good shape.

Well...looks can be deceiving.  That's a low res photo from my cell phone.  She doesn't look too bad from 10 feet away, but up close you can tell she's 30, and previous owners didn't put any TLC into her.

The frame needs repainted, clearcoat is peeling on the tank, engine seals weep oil, the pipes have no chrome left on the frame side, and all the aluminum needs refinished.  It's gonna be a project...but I can't wait to start.  I just need that garage space...

At least it's on the road and 99% there so base for a hell of a nice bike.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

O.K., so mebbe I was deceived. ;-) But you've got the right attitude.

Too bad about the pipes. They look good from the external side. Replacement 4/4 pipes are expensive. If they're not rotted through, I wonder if they can be re-chromed. Then again, many folks like the 4 into 1 pipes.

Burmashave:

3 out of 4 of the pipes are in good shape...baffles intact, no holes, not rotted out...just some rust on the frame side, and slight pitting. However, the lower pipe on the brake pedal side of the bike has 2 problems.

Problem 1: the flare on the engine end of the pipe is broken off.  I plan on having a local muffler shop I take my vehicles to weld it back on.

Problem 2: something rattles inside the muffler end...I think the baffle is broken off.  When I stick a probe in the hole there, it hits nothing.  I can feel the baffle with my finger in the other pipes, but not this one.

Anyone ever replace the baffles on these pipes?  My bike is a '78 cb750K...and they look to be all one piece.

As far a re-chroming goes, I have wondered about that myself.  A couple of gearheads i work with seem to think I'd spend as much as new ones rechroming them.  As far as aftermarket pipes go, I'm not a fan of the 4 into 1 look...I'd like to keep it as close to OEM as possible.  I don't care for those short megaphones (MAC) either.

You might do better rechroming if possible. the 4-4's are hugely expensive. A new set of 4-4's will run about $1,200, although you can get something much, much more reasonable if you want to convert to a 4-1. To me, the 4-4 pipes  are one of the trademarks of the bike, so I picked up a new set of 4-4's (only aftermarket are available) for my '77 CB750k. On the other hand, a 4-1 set will give you better performance and cost you much less.

Other than to say that the baffles do not show as a separate Honda part, I can't answer the rest of your questions. If you come up with nothing after doing a search, post something to the SOHC/4 Bikes forum.

Welcome, Goat. :)

I agree with this totally.  I'm currently warring with myself over the fact that I think 4-2's would open up the sides of the bike more, and also provide better cornering clearance, but I'm loath to put anything but 4-4's on the bike.

Try feebay or a local breaker for a set of used-but-serviceable exhaust.
