Just curious--what happened here (V-Twin)?

Just ran across this CL posting and was wondering what circumstance would bring about this type of failure:

Could break from a side hit or front hit, generator bolts to the broken section. Is it broke or cut? What year is it?

Did it break BEFORE the engine got into the box, or did it break WHILE the engine was inside the box?

^^  ;D

Sorry guys, no info--I just saw these pictures and wondered if somebody here has seen something like it before.

Looks like a really clean break, so impact seems the more likely cause like 754 said.

That doesn't look like any kind of fun.

It looks like (a) it got broken. (b) he doesn't have the broken part. (c) someone has 'cleaned up' the ragged edge of the break. and (d) he wants someone to weld on a hunk of metal and carve it out to work like an engine case.

No, thanks.

He needs to fleabay a better example, methinks.

possibly removed for lightness by some previous owner, racing maybe?

Can be fixed, but he'd have to pick up a part from a similar case and have it tigged on, that chunk he has is plate, different composition then the cases so would be difficult to weld on, and possibly not stay.

Ken.

Not a huge deal, far worse thing get repaired on them, probably, easier fix than chain thru a 750 case, if you have the broken piece for the XL.
