'72 750K plugs
« on: May 19, 2008, 07:22:40 PM »
ok, i finally decided its time to start swearing at #2 & #3 plugs as i try to get them out/replace them.  its been 3 years since i put a set of plugs in (i.e. since i got the bike home and running) and i can tell they need replacement.  when i replaced them, i threw in a set of ngk br8es since thats what was in my dad's garage (snowmobiles take them as does his bike now since he buys them a box at a time).  should i put another set of br8es (or whatever it really is) in them or go with the recommended NGK D8ES-L or NDX 24ES?  if it matters, i have a hondaman ignition system on my bike (which i still love btw, thanks for making them hondaman).

D8ES is what NGK lists for our '72's.
I put in a slightly hotter plug (7)as mine runs a tad rich and the plugs were fouling.
Gotta get the carbs off...again!

The part number is superceded with D8EA now. Do not use a plug with "R" in the designation unless it is a iridium plug.

got a set of D8EAs today.  i really need to find a proper spark plug socket (have an 18mm with a socket welded on it for now).  should run better with new properly gapped plugs (keeping the old for a backup after i re-gap them).  i have a feeling cylinder #2 was the one dropping since the boot on the plug was loose

When you put the caps back on, give them a twist on the plug wire to make sure they are tight. They screw on. You can also cut off about 1/4 in and screw them back on. This gives contact to fresher wire for the cap. As for the socket, I got my 18mm at sears and it fits perfect. You may need a 3 inch extension as well

i will make it sears one of these days, i swear ;)
still need to pick up a torque wrench (i hate having to drive 60 miles to use one i trust).  i will check the ends tonight, probably before i ride home since after ~13 miles i had a 3 cylinder again.  once i got back into a town and slowed down, and revved past 4000 once, i had a 4 cylinder again.  they don't sound so good on 3 cylinders, not to mention the fact that throttle response and power suck.

i cut a 1/4 inch or so off due to the fact that when i went to pull the #2 wire off to check the end i accidentally pulled the wire out of the boot.  seems to run better already :D

it appears that clipping ~1/4" off the wires took care of the once cylinder dropping.  does anyone know a good source for solid core spark plug wire?  assuming i can easily replace the wire at the coils i'd like to just get new wire.

Replacing leads is possible but not easy

I sometimes wonder if it isnt just better to get new 5 ohm coils. I mean you have to buy wire and then splice it which potentially creates a weak point. I guess it depends on how original a person wants their bike or how cheap they are I guess.
