Oh yeah, we can handle that. The 500T is just a last ditch effort to keep the 450 alive by stroking it to come up with 500cc. A number of 450 parts will swap out on it. But, like duster said, come on over to the hondatwins.com and you'll get lots of info and such on it. Here's a 500T that a fellow is turning into a modern type of Scrambler.

Look forward to seeing you over on the Twins site.

Well, given that I'm a vintage Jap bike nut, I never met one I didn't like...

That being said, the 500T's were undesirable in just about every way.

They were heavy, slow, and they vibrated much more than the 450 it superceded.  They had lousy brakes, and were very sedately styled, not to say boring...

They have the weird-alice torsion valve springs, rather than normal coil springs, although the 450 had these too and nobody else seems to mind.

About their only claim to fame at all was they were supposed to have had a very comfortable seat, which came from the OEM in brown, rather than black.

They came in dead last in every catagory in Cycle magazine's famous 1975 middleweight shootout, against Honda's own 550 four, Suzuki's GT550 and all the rest...

However, if you get it, any clutch problem it has should be very easy to fix, as nothing about it is rocket science, and parts are available enough.

Good luck with it, however you decide...

Okay, let's think about this a minute. The guy wants to turn this 500T into a Cafe. That ought to take care of the weight, styling and the seat for sure. The brakes, if they're so bad, can be taken care of. Now, I never rode a 500T so I can't say anything about the "vibration". I have ridden 450s though and didn't notice any vibration to speak of. I know that grumburg had one of the 500Ts  and I Believe CBGBs still does. Ask them what their thoughts are. I'm just saying that the bike deserves an even break. It's gonna be modified anyway. I'm a sucker for the CB77 305 Super Hawks and some wouldn't have one on a bet. I also like the 450s and again, some wouldn't have one. Seems to me that, if the bike is going to be Cafe'd anyway, it can only come out better. ;)

Okay, I kinda went over my 2-cents worth by about $5 worth. ::)  Sorry about that. :)

I owned one....it crapped out on me. The cam follower system is a bunch of sh!t..... I say steer clear but thats just my opinion. I would have to say that if you want a twin, go 450 DOHC or look for a Yami 650.

Well, Bill, you're right, of course.  If you're gonna cafe it, anything is a good palette.  And, as I said, I never met a vintage bike I didn't like, so I'd probably take one, too.

And, I'm also a sucker for taking the road less travelled, and since XS650's are much more common, I'd probably go for the 500 for that reason alone.

Ahh well, flip, flop, flip, flip, flop, flop, flip, flop, flip   ;D ;D ;D

Bill, all -

The 500 is just a 450, plain and simple. 90% of the parts are the same.
They screwed up a perfectly good carb by adding useless crap, went to tamer cams, and used a ridiculous exhaust system - all those things make it less "sporty" than its older brother. Despite the increase in displacement, it doesn't translate to increased performance at all.
The brakes are no worse than any of the Hondas of the era.
And undeniably unattractive.

And yes, a 350/450/500 will seem to vibrate, compared to any of the 4-cylinder Hondas of the era. So if you were raised on the Fours, it's a different kind of bike in that context.

I wouldn't buy it just because it's a 500T (and certainly not to restore), but because it's a good 450-type platform, like Bill says. All the normal resources are available for radical engine mods, as well as frame/running gear stuff.
I guarantee, a totally freaked out Hansen-type 450, at about 325 pounds and close to 60 hp will move out smartly.
Or if bobbers are your thing, they adapt well to that - it's a handsome engine that works in any role.

The only real issue is that your critical 500 parts (crank, pistons, etc.) may be very hard to find - 450 parts are generally available.

I think the bike has a undeserved bad reputation because 1) Honda changed a basically Okay bike and regressed to something not as good; and 2) it's butt-ugly.

If you're just using it as a platform for a cafe bike, I don't think it matters much whether you go 450 or 500, although as someone else mentioned, botton-end parts that are specific to the 500 might be harder to find.  (I'm assuming the 500 achieved the extra displacement by a stroked crank but no top-end changes - could be wrong on this.)  But if the bike is needing major engine work, I'd pass to start with.

You are right Mark, it became a 500cc because of a longer stroke. like Bill (tbpmusic) said, there are some parts that are 500 only (the crankshaft w/larger bearings & the pistons). then there were some parts that were different but could be used on the 450 (oil pump, trans gears w/ different ratios and dinned valve covers for sure). :)
I found a CB500T in a salvage, got it for nearly nothing, got it home and when I started taking it apart, I noticed the engine serial number and found it to have a CL450 engine in it. No big deal, I was just hoping to have a 500 lower end to see if I could build a larger displacement and make folks think it was a 450.

I would have sworn that I read about the bike being a lemon, but I have searched in my scanned documents and couldn't find it. Having no document to support what I said, I can not say anything about the bike without first hand experience, so don't take what I said without some kind of "evidence" from my side more than mere gossip.

Last winter's project was a 500T I bought for $200 out of a barn. 90% of the parts are either 450 or SOHC4. Sold it in 30 minutes at last year's VJMC meet at the AMA Museum to a guy who had one new and had spent the last 3 years looking for another one. Even the muts have their followers. Not Honda's worst bike, but not their best.

Mark, he 450 has roller bearings but the 500T (if I remember right) has ball bearings and the bearing assemblies are a bit larger than the 450 bearings. It I find out different, I'll get back to you. BTW, I'm not sure about the 350t bearings.

Guys -

The 500T indeed changed most of the crank bearings to ball bearings.
The rod bearings (big end), though, remained as needle or roller bearings.

Gotta admit that that is one fine looking bike  now. ;) I'd prefer a 450 myself, but the fact remains that the 500T isn't a bad looking bike.

You're right Raul - Classic and Motorcycle Mechanics magazine in 2007 has the CB500T as an official LEMON of the biking world. Lots of bits are the same as the superb CB450 but sadly not the useful bits. The crank is different and wears like nothing you've ever seen, the clutch is prone to fail, it's very very butt ugly in standard trim and ruined (IMHO) a great line in CB450s.

There are some good things though - rip out 2nd and 3rd gears fro the CB500T and put them in your CB450 for a close ratio gearbox, plus the CB500T head is better for twin plugging due to minor changes in the design....throw the rest in the skip  ;D

other thing the 500T ate was starter clutches, usually destroying the alternator rotor in the process
