750 vintage racing sidecar
« on: May 20, 2008, 07:58:09 AM »
i got an 75 750 engine and i was thinking of powering a vintage racing sidehack with it. The problem is, I really dont know how to build one. Does anyone know of any framebuilders that could point me in the right direction. I want it to look kinda like this:

skip to 1:24. If its possible, I'd like to make it streetable as well. Like in this video.

Member of the original MTV generation here. I still remember the first video; 'Rock n Roll Killed The Video Star'... or something like that. Back when it was about music videos. Hell, I didn't even know what a sidehack was but just thinking it was the coolest bike I'd ever seen.

A street version would be, in 80's speak, wicked! Maybe even Rad.

 After seeing the video I want one again.  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D
I've been looking for specifics on sidecar frames for a couple of years but haven't been able to find anything worthwhile, its an extremely small market in USA and I think the frames are from Europe (not a good with current state of dollar)
I have FIM  handbooks but never thought to check there until now for specifications.
I know a friend in Britain had a rolling chassis, for an inline four (he was going to fit either a Kawa 100 or Suzuki GS 1100)
I'll have to harass him some more to take pics with dimensions.

I would classify the sidecar as a truly noble persuit.
I finally built one myself.

That would be "Video killed the radio star" by the Buggles. (I think that was their name..)
In hindsight, they were kinda both right and wrong.....

Cool sidecar! Imagine going insanely fast on that thingie....... :o

Well a tread that this story belongs to. It was suppose to be in my CB750 from the past post but this will do. It was an article in Big Bike mag. 1974. It sure looks like the one in the video.

Enjoy. It was street legal.

I built one for mine, it is lower than most street bikes but higher than a kneeler..

When I decided to build it was a Wed night..
Thursday, I had made a wire template to bend tubes and took it to the muffler shop.

Friday I got the metal back, I may have started Friday, I know I flogged all day Saturday & into the night..

Sunday it was on the vintage dirt track running w/o other bikes.. I was the monkey!!

Will try to find some pics..

Basically a platform with a small wheel, I used a Cushman wheel first, then built a hub to run a 50 Mini-trail wheel. (sorta close to first pic)

The rig comes off in under 15 minutes!

In Europe 10 or 15 years back they were popular, in street frames with smaller auto wheels and leading link front.. works way better.. what I am saying here is mostly street frame with smaller wheels, is a lot easier to build than a kneeler..

Also I myself do not think the kneeler height is good for the street as they already cant see you on a bike 2wice as high..

 It was great fun..

Doh, I forgot about this until now.
I had it for about 6 weeks until I wore out the front tyre, (one side was down to the canvas through cornering too fast)
It was too wide to fit through showroom doors and took up too much space in the shop. I want a kneeler now though
