New Indiana guy with a 750
« on: May 18, 2008, 01:46:16 PM »
Hey guys, I'm out of central indiana.  I picked up a cb750 K from my dad last summer and since stumbled upon this web site.  The threads look awesome with great info so I decided I wanted to become a part of this community.  Perhaps lean at times on the expertise offered here  ;)

Welcome from Chicago :)

Tell us more about the bike, did dad own it long?  How's it running?

Dad bought the bike from his brother and since then, hes had it for about 5-7 years I believe.  In the time he owned it, its had one carb sync and one oil change.  Hes not very proactive with any pms.  Last couple years he only went through about 1 tank of gas for the whole summer so he finally decided to let me just have it.  Last summer was my first riding season and i'm having a blast with it.  I cleaned and rebuilt the carbs because all the bowl seals were leaking and I figured it would have enough junk to warrant it.  Put some pod filters on it and quickly realized that would require re-jetting so i set them aside and put a new oem filter on it.  Some new oil, brake pads and rear brake adjustment and the bike hit the streets with me.  Over the winter I picked up that new seat on it from ebay.  Hated the original seat, with the ribs going straight back.  Oh yeah, I also replaced the points with an electric starter a few months ago.  A new pair of coils and ngk plugs and wires.  That seemed to help quite a bit.  Still having some low rpm range power loss so I did a compression check with the bike cold this last weekend.  Cylinder 1 was 150, 2 was 105, 3 & 4 were 130.  So I see an issue i'm going to have to address in the near future.  Really excited about possibly rebuilding the motor with that 836 kit i've been reading about here.  Time and money will tell there.

Sounds like you've been quite busy!  :)  Right on.

Regarding compression on #2, have you checked the valve adjustments?

cheers

No I have not checked the valves yet.  Never torn a motor like apart before so I am a little hesistant to do it this early in the riding season.

Good news, no need to tear the motor apart!  Look at the valve cover and you'll see eight little round ports with screw-in covers.  Unscrew these (gently) and the valve adjusters (tappets) are right behind them.  Grab yourself a manual or three from HERE and check it out, valve adjustment is pretty straightforward even for the novice mechanic.

cheers
