Andy,

I know, I know.  But if you saw this bike you would say the same thing.  It looked like it rolled out of the show room.  I thought that it was a resto, but it was 100% original.  They are only orginal once and the value of that bike is HUGE.  How he kept it in that condition is beyond me.  Not a ding, chip, scratch, rip, rusted bolt, dull finish, crack, etc.  The only thing he changed was tires, oil, and filter, bulbs, cables, brake pads, shock oil, and air filter.  Odometer was 40,000 ish!  If he ever sells it, I have first dibs.

Sparty

I do know what you mean Art...BUT....look at Franks bike (750K2) in the pic above...when I saw this the other week it looked so new and shiny - only 8800 miles! And all I wanted to do was take it for a long ride!

I know, I know...the value will decrease as time goes by if you ride it (perhaps if you dont maintain it or it gets in an accident) but whats the alternative? Keep it locked in a garage/showroom to look at only....why would you do that?! What good does it do you or the bike to sit idle? Its no longer a motorcycle at that point, its an ornament. If you want a bike as an investment to sell at a later date thats another matter but then its still not a bike its a commodity or asset. A bike was built for one purpose - to get you from A to B and have a great experience doing so  ;)

I think this old guy you met has the right idea...hes getting on in years and this may be his only real pleasure...every day he as the chance to experience what its like to be young again, every single time he twists that throttle....no money can replace that  ;) And when hes gone...the bike will still be there...ready to roll  ;)

cheers
Andy

Most of you guys havent ridden a Cb 750 long enough to realize how long it will take to actually wear one out..

and because of that you dont trust and use them as much..
Most of us dont get enough seat time to wear one out..

I know a guy that has several high mileage minty bikes..
A 70 500 Kaw bought new that looks better than new that is in a museum a lot of the time.. it has 40 K plus miles on it and you cannot tell without seeing the speedo.

His 72 750 while not stock is just as cherry and probably has  at least 90K..or a lot more.

The  biggest worries for him..
idiots wiping him out

Hope,

Tell this dickwad that if he ever touches your bike again that he will be riding a crotch-less rocket since you will rip his balls off and feed them to him.

That's just not acceptable.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

Agreed!!

And something tells me that when you do say that directly in his face, with the proper scowl, the most he'll be able to muster will be a pitiful whimper.

Sometimes you don't.

I rode to work today and when I took my lunch break, I found that the black Honda crotch rocket owner next to me had scotch taped a note that reads, "Don't park so close to me."

No problem with the note other than the fact that I was a good 2 feet from his ride, and the fact that he used about 10 inches of scotch tape to stick the stupid freakin note on my tank.

Totally uncalled for.  If it had been my newly painted gold tank, some #$%* would have went down today.  I have the orange tank on the bike right now...  but that doesn't mean that I am inviting any more scotch tape to be stuck to my tank.  however I am trying to deal with this civilly.

Stick a note on his bike thanking him for his concern, but explain that your old classic has an exellent immune system, so it won't be contaminated by his two-wheeled toothpaste tube.....

sparty, if you're still paying attention to this thread... I think SamCR750's suggestion is a good one; if your acquaintance hasn't heard of this place he might like to.

Thanks again for sharing.

I did tell him about the forum.  He said he is more of a quiet biker.  I respect that.

I have an almost totally restored 1976 cb550, and I still ride it in the rain, believing if you own it you must ride it.

I own a Civil War rifle, I own a Joe DiMaggio baseball, I own rare antique pocket watch.  I do not believe that just because you own something you must use it daily.

Hey, I understand the rationale for riding vintage bikes, I ride one.  But, in my initial post I indicated that if I had such a sweet 100% original bike that I would take it to shows on a trailer.  Then some guy(s) on here slam that idea - which I am fine with, but they make it seem like you are a terrible person or not a real biker if you do not ride that original bike.  Just because I haven't been riding for three decades doesn't make me less of a biker.  I was in the womb three decades ago!  Now, I am not sensitive at all ;), I accept other opinions, but when some people are closed to other people’s opinion, that burns me and shows their ignorance.  There is one guy on here, in particular, that is just an annoying arse.

The guy with the orange bike bought it to use and treats it as such. It probably wasnt collector material when he bought it, so he treats it differently.

When an item gets bought as a collector item, it generally gets treated differently, and the more that gets paid for it, the more carefull some are with it.

bottom line is, if you own it, you decide how you want to use it.
