cb550k 76 carb issue?
« on: May 21, 2008, 06:51:15 PM »
Hi All,

I just got finished rebuilding my carbs. The bike is running better already, though I have only bench synched so far (I'm hoping to use a friends sync tool, but I have not done that yet) I tried to adjust the carbs to get a better idle, and I had to set the air idle screw all the way in to get the engine sounding ok. The jet needle is already set at one from the bottom (I think is very rich). I also just checked the points and they seem pretty dirty and grey. I am going to get a new points set and replace them because I don't know when this might have been done last.

My question is, should I also move the jet needle down to the last notch? Or should I leave this alone until I replace the points and sync properly and see if this can lean up my mixture/fix my problem?

Also do I need to redo the timing when I replace the points?

I have never worked on the timing/points side ofthings, but it seems fairly straightforward. Any suggestions?

Am I on the right track? This bike has always run consistently, just a but rough. I'm trying to smooth her out.

Thanks! This board is awesome.

Carb tuning is the last thing on the list.  All other tune up items need be addressed beforehand.
Valve clearance, Cam chain tension,  Spark plug clean/gap/replace, point cleaning/gap, timing, air filter renew/clean.

No way your Idle air bleed screws should be all the way in.  Should make the idle too rich.

Stock Slide needle setting is 4th from the top.  Do you have stock air box/filter and exhaust?

Air filter is a foam filter on the stock box, but the exhaust is a 4-1, I don't know what kind, but it has no baffle.

Do I need to do all of those things? Or can I do one at a time?

You only want to do a partial tune-up?

Can't predict a good outcome from that!

I guess I'm just lazy, but you are definitely correct, guess I'll just get to work and see if I can improve the situation. Are there any parts that I will need besides the points before I start?

EDIT: Besides plugs...

Thanks TT. The guru, as always

You're going to need the foam filter cleaner and oil.

Possibly condensers, depending on condition.  Not normally replaced as routine.  But, until they are known good... It's a possibility.
