good to hear you got to ride it(must admit to going for jaunts with dud plates myself)
the 650 primary chain has a spring loaded tensioner that is accessed thru the oil pan. no adjustment but it could be hanging up. the tensioner blade can also wear and can be pulled out said oil pan. primary chain could still be stretched but that would be my first port of call.

I don't suppose the primary chain can be replaced with the engine inplace????
Thought not. :( damn didn't Popa Honda realise his bikes were going to last forever?

Congrats on your first ride, Hush!

Some of your chain noise may go away once the carbs are synced.

I would still pull the oil pan and look at the tensioner and spring. those chains look pretty robust. and mystic is right about the carb sync quietening things down

Will take your advice Scunny, I've had the pan off before and I wouldn't mind the oppertunity to check the filter screen again now that some decent oil has passed through it.

OK everyone stop panicing OK and move away from the motorcycle ;D
That horrible noise that I thought was my cam chain trying to exit the crankcase via the primary chain turns out to be the only other chain on the bike!? ???
Yep remember way back when I was #$%*in about the PO swapping side covers and he had left the locating dowels in both the case and the cover?
And remember when I cleverly realigned the drive chain guide as it had been attacked by a snapped chain at some stage?
Well at speed (remember this bike been in shed since I got it in January) the alignment was not as accurate as I hoped ha ha but my bike mechanic fixed that.
He also discovered a few other of my misdemeanors, like the number 2 and 3 plugs were not in tight? I'm sure that was a wee job I gave Jaffa to do!!
On the up side my timing was spot on and he synced the carbs beautifully.
It still sounds like a can of shaken stones until it warms up but he said (and being a genuine Honda trained mechanic I totally believe him) "THEY ALL SOUND LIKE THAT" ha ha ha now where have I heard that before on here???
He found a pair of the genuine front fork reflectors too which was on my shopping list.
I had the carb to head rubbers incorrectly positioned too, I kinda thought that I was clever finding the wee arrow and getting them all around the right way but did you know that there is a small metal arrow on the head ports too and they need to align with the arrow on the rubbers? OK so everyone knew that but me. ;D
There is a very small leak on the number 3 carb rubber and he said just buy one, mate I said if I can find 4 I'm fitting four! do you know how hard it is to get 30 year old rubbers to behave??
So I'm real close to finishing my project and actually riding it full time, I pick it up from the workshop tomorrow (after night shift  :-\) and have it booked in for WOF REG &VIN on Monday morning and apart from finding a few finishing items that should be her complete.
Oh one other piece of luck while I'm writing a book, my mechanic has another customer who rides an ex Police CB360 with all the trimmings and that guy had given my mechanic a wee gift which he passed onto me.
These are copies of the original badges from Ministry of Transport bikes.
My mechanic got them many years ago when he was asked by the MOT to fix a crashed bike and the screen was history so he peeled the transfer off it and kept it for a souvenir.
The 360 guy is a bit up on computer graphics and fixed the rips so I get real badges for my bike ha ha as if it doesn't already stop traffic. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
I will post final photos when I get the last bits for the bike, screen etc and tank painted, oh yeah and that first ride video that I promised Kitsune to show her our beautiful country. :)

Yeah thought I was in for a major teardown there just for a minute, goes to show that sometimes us newbies to SOHC need a bit of a hand from an old hand. ;D
They tell me Vin,reg (6months) and wof will cost me just under $200 which is all good, I'll just add it to the final costs in my bike log, think I'm hovering around the $2000 mark for her.

Thanks Phil but after looking at the one for sale locally I've decided to look at something a bit bigger.
The little CB350f just seemed soooo light and I can't see it keeping up with a 650, but I'm going to check out that CB650CL tomorrow after work so hopefully my hobbit missus can touch the ground as I'd really like another SOHC 650 in the shed. ;D

I took my one on a Classic Club run today. Did 100 miles on the run going by the trip meter. Most of the time I spent cruising along the twisty highway at 60 to 65 mph and both the bike and I enjoyed it. Before the run I had a fuel blockage in one carb and I wrapped it in the lower gears and pulled the choke a few times until it cleared. Once cleared I took it up to 85 mph and more to go.
What got me on the classic runs she has been on, she can out perform some of the English bikes like Triumphs on the tight twisty corners and twisty hilly environments by using the gears and not the brakes. Not that I intend to thrash it at all, but she will respond when I want her too, bless her.
My CB350F is off to the National Classic Meeting in Wellington next month. Looking forward to that.

Dear diary: Bike now road legal, WOF/REG/VIN ($375) and has new plates. :D
Rode her a bit today, takes some getting used to and you really have to put this bike into gear, many false neutrals lurk for the unwary. :o
Gave quite a few "boy racers" a fright while riding around, was totally unintentional and probably more their guilty consciences than anything else ha ha. ;D
Next job will be to track down a decent car painter to do that tank, only need it done white as I understand that I can get computer drawn decals created.
Plan to put a few more miles (yes its in miles not k's) on bike tomorrow just to get more used to her.
Minor bad note, developed a leaking gas tap, tweeked it up and seems to have cured it.

Dear diary: took bike for a good ride but dissapointing open road top speed of 55mph, handling very very light, gears have an industrial feel to them and could do with that 6th gear.
Brakes fine and bonus is the gear I bought to ride in all works out nicely, armoured jacket not too heavey and tons of pockets, flip face helmet getting worn in.
Battery seems to have died so on charge, bike stalled 3 times at intersections, not sure why?

Now, I'm not going to read through all the pages, and I give you permission to smack me for that if this is a stupid question... But did you run voltage tests yet? I think the stalling might be related, and of course the loss of charge.

You could be right Sporkfly, have only had the bike on the road today and never noticed any battery drop until now so it could be that the battery is being drained by simply riding the bike.
I know plenty of others on here have had this problem on their CB650's.
I better check some old postings for the solution they found.

Have you checked the rotor with a digital multimeter?
(resistance in ohms)
One of the more common weak links of the 650 is the rotor.

And as for the 55mph barrier....
In what gear?
Have you tried getting the motor to(or near) redline in each gear?

One thing to try with that, is loosen the gas cap a bit.
The gas cap might be plugged not allowing it to let in air fast as the gas is being pulled into the carbs.

When I was riding with a smallish fairing(before all the modifications, basically stock), with me and the wife, I could hit 80mph.

I'll notify the fire brigade to be on standby and red line her in all gears then ;D
Could be any one of a thousand things and as I'm back at work I'm not going to have the time for a few days to check them out.

Those mufflers you got in from the States will not look so costly to you now Hush. If you had of delayed or only recently stumbled on to them, they would have set you back half as much again with our dollar being so low against the greeny. You got in at a good time.

My bro-inlaw suggested my handling problems could be tire related and thinking about it he could be right.
I got a brand new Metzler fitted and just assumed (that's gonna get me killed) that the bike shop set the right pressure in it.
On examination it is as hard as concrete and probably a lot to do with the steering/handling issues I'm having.
One corner I got into at 55 mph I wasn't quite sure I was gonna get out of as the front skipped a bit. (must invest in khaki coloured jodpurs for those occasions.) ;D
