On the more serious side - I never had any electrical problems (at least not ones that couldn't be solved). But when looking at shape of electrics, try measuring resistance between earth wire and frame itself. Should be absolutely none. Very often it's the fault earth that causes a lot of problems. I'm not saying this will be the fix - but it costs nothing, and may help...

Buber hows the riding these days in Poland?
I'm kinda getting used to the old "hot start" issue and I know I can bump start the bike in a couple of inches so I'm not worried about being stranded.
Kit on the other hand has less riding time in and has a dread fear of being stuck somewhere on the side of the road with a dead bike, can't blame her and the world can be a dangerous place for stranded damsels these days.
Possibly once the weather in her part of the world improves and Kit gets some more time in the saddle and learns to trust her bike the power loss problem may become less of an issue for her.
A few good long rides should do the trick. ;D

NOW I can't complain, But this winter was really long.. And I live in the mountains, so I'm always behind schedule - until snow melts. But this week spring has sprung and all's well! Although, today's morning ride at 7am to work -  4 celsius below zero...  ;D

Actually I was thinking about your problem (which is weird), and maybe somewhere temperature comes to play? Like when some cables get hotter and loose connection or are shorting something, and hence bigger drain, but when you switch off, the battery comes back?
I had once faulty impulsator that would stop working only after few kms - when it got some temp...
Still, my bet is on charging/faulty wire issue rather than starter or anything else.

Good luck with searching, and remember that electrics are digital in fixing - means either it works/conducts or not. Means that with meter and patience you can find it. Only sometimes it takes a LOT of patience...  ;D

It's not SO much that I'm that afraid of it just dying on me (though I have a hell of a time crash starting at intersections, it's so busy here) but also I want to be able to ride to school, and/or work, and if my bike's not charging the battery over these rides, then how am I going to get home?

I guess a lot of people make noises about their bikes not charging with 'city riding' but charging on highway riding etc.  I dunno.  I'm really not sure where to go with this anymore, because I haven't seen anything truly definitive *yet* except the sheer fact that it doesn't seem to want to charge very well when it's on rides, though both hot and cold it seems to test just fine. ???

If your bike runs fine and gets you to work then cools while you are there, surely it will then be happy to start for you to ride home? ;D
Possibly not really a heat problem but a recharging problem eh!
You need a riding mate (when the weather improves for you) get Mickey to follow you for a decent distance, it's amazing how much confidence you get in your machine after putting a few miles on them.
Mine came in boxes and bags (literally) so after putting the big jigsaw together I was quite dubious as to how relaible it would be.
My initial idea was to assemble the whole thing and see how badly the motor ran, then tear it down and rebuild the motor.
Happily and much to my surprise she ran well and had no leaks, took me some time to get her tuned to a decent level but now I can boot her ass as hard as I like and she don't miss a beat. ;D

Uh, yeah, we've done the Mickey follows Kit around on the streets to keep the big bad caggers off her azz but... then came to realize that the bike still had (charging) problems and it's been up and down ever since. I had to bump start it a couple of times and I think that kind of worried her on trusting it.

It'll get there. Kit is learning supreme patience from all of this. I'm learning how to get pissed and be constantly broke like when I was younger. It all balances out in the end.  ;D ;D

Actually I'm remembering that Kit took her starter motor apart earlier on last year, I wonder if she got it all back together correctly......I know! Steal er borrow the other 650's starter and see if that helps. :D

Yahooo go ride it (when you wake up). :D
Mines has battery troubles now, battery flat and water levels down #1 half empty? not sure what causes that?
Have got a trickle charger on order thanks to Scunny and his tip about Bunnings stocking them.

You might have your battery load tested, or just get a new one, maybe your starting issue will solve itself, too ;D

That's a plan, get battery tested and replace solenoid.
Maybe my old Honda mechanic was right and these bikes bad reputation in the charging area is not warranted, maybe the solenoids just need changing out every 30 years or so? ;)

well consider: I think to say anything has a 'bad charging system' after 30 years should be kind of expected, and if it didn't start going to hell for 25 years then it's probably at least respectable quality...

...now yamaha virago starters... THOSE have a DESERVED, bad rep.

Dear diary: magnificent riding weather here but prospect of the rest of the week turning to crap so got out for a good spin, bike did it's usual protestation trick of running on 3 and a half cylinders for a few miles, maybe I should warm her up a bit more before taking off?
Anyhow after a couple of miles she felt really good and had an enjoyable morning around the bay.
I feel for you guys'n gals with snow and unridable conditions as even in mid winter we just get some rain.
Funny thing happened when I dropped into SUPERCHEAP to see if they had any solenoids I could use on the bike, I'm putting my helmet back on and this guy in a suit stands in front of me.
I'm thinking "you are either a real cop wanting to know what the heck I'm doing or you think I am a cop ha ha".
So he tells me he has just imported a new car from overseas and is getting it re Vinned next door at the testing station (funny thing to share with a complete stranger thinks me  ;D) and the radiator leaks so he wants to know how he can drive the car legally down to the radiator place to get it fixed without incurring a ticket?
Um "you think I'm a cop eh"!
"Er yes?"
"Check out the 30 year old bike mate ha ha".
Happens all the time, good job I'm a nice guy and serving Officer for the govt anyway, think of the backhanders I could make......wavey music as the screen swirls
"Sure no worries mate, follow me oh and there is an upfront $20 charge for the motorcycle escort". :D

hey, mate, have you had your carbs synched yet?  My bike did the three and a half cylinder thing until the carbs were synched.  She still likes a good 5 min warmup and the first few hundred yards with 1/4 choke...

Buber that's horrific looking snow dude!
You come off that road and you'll have to wait till next spring to find your bike. :D
Kit, yep had my carbs synced and it made a huge difference to the noises coming from my engine, think I'm just taking off too soon so will warm her up a bit more.
I push the choke in as soon as she is idling, not sure if my wee trick with the air filter cover off is having any effect at low speeds but at high speeds I had no troubles getting response.
Bluddy females.....need lots of warm-up before the main event. ;D

I must say, that since i swapped for iridium plugs cold starts with problems are thing of the past. It is A LOT of difference, especially with cold engine. I have the coils powered directly from the batt via relay. All in all - it always starts and runs without problem. The noise always subdues after warm-up - it's the valves....

This road is a mountain pass, around 1100 m above sea level. It was snowy winter this year... :D
That's my bike, and my lady's.. :D

I don't see how that air filter cover thing works, because these carbs are jetted SO lean it's crazy already.  To add MORE air to the mix seems like piston suicide to me...

Eh, my bike runs richer than Madoff with the stock set up.  Of course, I'm at almost 5,000 feet.  Taking off that breather cover helped immensely so I guess it's dependent on a lot of factors.  And you guys have the mechanical carbs, though I don't know how much difference that makes.

Yeah Leekeller uses the same trick, I might have even suggested it to him but I stole it off that 650 site I sent you.
I think it helps more at speed than low idle or tootling around town, adds truckloads of air to the mix, if you find your bike bogging at higher speeds Kit give it a go.
I'm kinda thinking that over the last 30 years since our bikes were designed the gas mixture we use has changed so much that a change like this is a form of balancing act.
