Nuts I've got a leak on my front brakes, wonder how obtainable new seals for a 30 year old bike are?
Suzuki got me new fork seals for Jaffas 82 400 so maybe Honda can go one better!
Damn now I have the Custom with front brake locking on and Police 650 with brakes leaking, add that to my frustrating search for a brake pedal for the GSX400L and it's brake month!!

Hey Hush ... saw the Master Cyl kit on Ebay last night and also in another auction the seal for the piston in the caliper. Try Econohonda in Te Aroha first though. Our dollar is not worth much at present with the greenback.

Hi Mike, well they are kinda special them pipes eh ha ha I've had heaps of enquiries and offers for them.
Actually they are only your bog standard chrome pipes that have been powder coated black, the PO did the front guard too so I'm guessing the chrome was pretty tatty.
If they can do that here in li'l old NZ I bet they can do it in the states.
By the way you have excellent taste in motorbikes. ;D
Mines an 82 as well, not quite sure on the CL/SC part of things as they are a bit rare here in NZ, you could well be right in saying mine is also an SC.

Hey Hush

they look the same except for the custom emblem on the side covers
and your paint looks a lot better than mine

my clymers manual list the differences between the custom and the Nighthawk
If you would like I could scan it for you,  ( if i can figger it out  :D)
if you don't already have it ?

your mufflers look diff. are they aftermarket or stock, mine are welded to exhaust pipe, all one piece, yours look to be slip on with a clamp ?
they look nicer, shiny black and not so much flare ?

don't know where i got the 84 CL ( Brain fart !)
Thanks, you too have excellent taste in motorcycles.  ;D

Yeah they are slip on's with a clamp so probably aftermarket.
I have the Clymer manual which covers both my CB650PZ and the Custom so all good.
Have had brake issues with the Custom, there is a wee pin hole in the brake fluid reservoir that some useful types on here told me to unclog and the system has now stopped pressurising, good job too cos it was trying to automatically apply the brakes at speed! :(
Tank was full of gunk and I had to strip the carbs off to clean them.
Got a question for you Mike, when starting your bike, do you push the choke lever full on and hold it there for about 4 cranks before the bike starts?
I still feel I have a carb/fuel problem as an instant fire-up is not going to happen on this bike, my old PZ fires up first time.
Paint job looks a lot better in photos than it is, nice big crease on top of tank and a few small chunks out of sides.
Lugs that hold side covers on are mainly snapped off so I made up some small brackets for the top and bolt it on up by battery, at least I can guarantee I wont lose any when out riding.
Can't believe I have to remove the whole seat unit to access the battery!!!

I like the black , will have to look for some  :)

that brake issue sounds scary (if,when) I get this bike running will have to watch out for that, my brake reservoir is pretty faded and flakey on the outside, fluid looked cloudy when i drained it, bike sat outside for about 2 yrs before i got it.(UNCOVERED)

don't know about starting yet, got it non running (the motor turned freely  :)) so I cleaned out the tank and found it leaking at the seam by the petcock,
then pulled the carbs and cleaned the best i could without unracking them (hope they're good but reading all the post about carbs I'm not holding my breath)
put in a new battery to see if it would fire NO SPARK  :'(
found- rotor, R/R, 1 ign. coil, and 1 pickup coil bad

still waiting on a used set of pickups from ebay :-\ so i can see if it will even fire
after you get it fired-up how does it run ? Idle ?
seams most of the other guys here with 650s have the mech. carbs not the CV carbs, alot seem to have some little glitch with them

have the same prob. with my side covers, broken tabs
and yea dumb design on the seat, have to unbolt to remove  :(

when you get if worked out you'll have to post it here ,have been keeping tabs on this thread  ;D
now you have 3 bikes to keep running, will do what I can to keep
UNCLE MURPHY away  ;)

Oh yea just remembered, when i was hooking up the choke and throttle cable and adjusting, I noticed the choke lever was moving ok but wasn't operating the butterfly's correctly , took the lever and cable off (at the lever) to clean it out, seams the cable was stiky at the cam that it rides in and wasn't moving freely
Don't know if this will help but check to see if the butterfly's are opening and closing completly (unless you already did, then NEVER MIND  ;D)

Dear diary: haven't had a lot of time for the project for a while with Xmas etc, found out from another Police bike rebuilder that if I swap front sprocket which at present is 16 tooth for a 17 tooth (he got one from USA off Ebay) and swap the rear which is 40 tooth for a 38 tooth one I can get much improved response.
He says he gets much better cruising top end speed and response with just a small loss of round town acceleration.
OK whose got spare sprockets lying around? come on guys I let you read my project for free....time to help Hush out with his experiment. ;D

Hush ... the sprockets you mention are the standard gearing for a 350F. 17T front and 38T in the rear. Forget the PM I sent you, the spare sprocket I have in the garage is a 36 and although it runs okay on the 350F it is no good if the sprocket side plate is installed as the chain would run at an angle when it passses alongside. I know cause I tried it.
Look for 350F sprockets for your requirements. Cheers

Hush
Thanks for the brake info.  I'd give you the ones off my 82 SC, they're a little worn but not bad, chain was rusted and stretched so I will replace the set
should be standard on your 82 also ?

Wish I could get them to you without it costing a fortune

Good luck
Mike

38 teeth Hush. You can buy sprockets of 37T, 36T and so on for them. But 38T standard. If you tried using the 36T you would not be able to run with the cover plate on. Sure you are not trying to get me to disclose how many I have here in the garage? Cheers

Dear diary: having taken a week off work to put some decent miles under my seat, wouldn't ya know it one of my front brake seals has popped!!! >:(
I thought something was amiss a while ago but had other stuff to do.
Hope the Honda guys get my ordered seals ASAP.
Apart from that the bike sounds/looks/runs well and I just need time to get out and trust it over some distance as so far the short runs I've had ended in running out of petrol (my fault being anal about the new gas tank paint) and running a flat tire.

The first season of riding is the one you find all the little faults you couldn't see or missed on the garage floor.
fork seals, brake system(leaks/failure), among other things... are easiest found on the road.(or later inspection after 100-200 miles)

I have come to live with some...speedo and tach problems...(bent needles)
the '79's are year specific for those, using a '80's speedo for now, I miss that 120mph mark, the 80mph mark is too easy to peg. (yes there IS a highway near me with a recently raised MPH limit of 80!)
Other problems I fixed either immediately(if possible, or needed) or the next winter when she is in the garage anyway.

I bet there are quite a few twisty roads around you.
Doesn't NZ have a good sized mountain range?

Yup runs right through the middle of both islands. ;D
Econohonda can do those seals for $19 for the inner brake caliper seal and $27 for the dust cover.....better be gold plated for that price!
Just been invited to an open day at one of NZ's better motorcycle curcuits, put in a day as a flag man and get to run your bike for free! ;D ;D ;D
4 different speed ranges, just wanting to drive around the course, wanting to give it a wee bit of a fistfull, slightly competitive and lastly completely nuts full bore racing.
The second one appeals to me, not sure how they would take to a cop bike whizzing round Manfield though, could be a bit disconcerting in the mirrors for the rest of the field. ;)
My son did his Police training at Manfield, its a good fast circuit for practicing chases in cop cars. :D

Dear diary: Econohonda came through for me with the disc brake seals, thanks Hamish at Econohonda NZ.
Hamish even rang me to make sure he had the order right, well done that man.
Now if I can only win the auction on Trade-me for those riding boots!!
Tomorrow will be fitting seals and testing bikes stopping power.
Boredom got the better of me today and I finally got round to draining the fork fluid from the GSX400, made up a witches brew of 25% motor oil and 75% foek oil, seems to have worked.

Dear diary: having fitted the new front disc seals I find the brakes now are total crap, very small bubbles appear ceaslessly in the master cylinder fluid tank.
I'm pretty sure the brake unit is well bled of air but I'm a bit worried now that the master cylinder has some form of leak.
I think I remember replacing the master cylinder kit?
