Dear diary: having fitted the new front disc seals I find the brakes now are total crap, very small bubbles appear ceaslessly in the master cylinder fluid tank.
I'm pretty sure the brake unit is well bled of air but I'm a bit worried now that the master cylinder has some form of leak.
I think I remember replacing the master cylinder kit?

Yo Soos, work commitments prevent me attending the race weekend, (boss won't approve my leave application) but if I did go I doubt that Jaffa would let me out on the lose on my own. ;D

haha... too bad.
Mabey one of these years.

Thats one of the reasons I'm not telling the wife when I run on the salt flats.
 ;D ;D

And those freiking little air bubbles??
Frustrating aren't they?

you can reverse bleed your system(force in the brake fluid from the calipers up to the MC)

OR pump a whole lot o brake fluid through it the normal way....

Personally when I get that(especially last time I messed with my dual disk front end on my '79) I simply let my bike set a few days, and each time I went for a smoke outside I would give 20-200 short(1/4 pull) pulls on the lever.
it would force bubbles to come out of the system.

Eventually it works that way... but takes a while.

You can also get a wackamole(wooden stick, dead blow hammer, etc) and tap on the bar end.
Watch the bubbles pour up.

Then pump it a bit, then whack(not too hard, just enough to dislodge the air bubbles) then pump, whack...
sounds disgusting.

Try telling the wife they you are going to pump and whack it in the garage for a 1/2 hour.
hahahaha....

Basically your brake system has air in it is all.

Yeah just found out about them "micro" bubbles, forum member suggested tying back the lever over night to release them.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Dear diary: Update on the brake saga, seems time and patience win out on those tiny micro bubbles.
Anyhow the brake lever feels firmer and with luck I'll get out and do some miles on her tomorrow to see how it feels under load.

Dear diary: I started this rebuild thread on May 21st 2008 and it's been one step forward two steps back for most of it.
Today I finally got some payback ;D, after getting the front brakes to bleed out finally I couldn't see any good reason why the bike would fail me on the open road so I determined yesterday that today would be "Hoon day".
Last time I took her out I ran outa gas, my fault entirely but it reminded me that if she breaks down I'm gonna be a long way from home and up to now I didn't quite trust the old girl. :-[
So pulled her out of the shed and fired her up (battery sounded a bit low) then went back inside to don armour.
I cautiously wheeled out of my drive and rode sedately through the suburbs until I hit a straight back road....and then I gave her a fist full....not that brave really as the road is dead straight for about 3 miles but there was a nasty cross wind.
Happy that she would do at least 80mph I tootled around to the shopping centre where my partner "Jaffa" works at a gas station.
But wouldn't ya know it, the bike was going so well I just didn't want to stop so soon so I continued on out into the country and dropped into the Wharerangi Cemetery to visit my late sister and brother (they would both have got a serious kick outa seeing me all decked out in Police riding gear and the bike all lights and sirens ha ha).
After that I thought a wee romp up a short highway to get some high speed riding ( she does a nice 70mph but I'm still toeing around looking for 6th gear!) then around the harbour and up the coast a little.
Boy racers (do you get those in the states?) slowed right down on seeing the bike, people checked their seat belts again and many studied there speedos to ensure they were doing the legal speed he he ;D
Then I called around to see my son just in case he was home, patrol car there so parked behind it (damn, photo opportunity of the day and I let it go) and we had a quick visit until he got called to an accident.
This is where the bike refused to start, but I had a feeling the battery was down so I scooted her along in 2nd pooped the clutch and wheelstood down the road, ah the rush ha ha, damn I'm old. ;D
Then still not wanting to put the bike away as she was behaving so well I did a quick drive-by of our house and rocked on out to see Jaffa.
I just sooooo enjoyed today's blast, the more I rode, the more confident I became in the old girl.
I found that by grabbing a nice big slice of throttle between gears she responded really well and climbed hill like a goat!
Have battery on charge, thought my front brake cylinder was leaking again but by following the fluid trail I found it is actually coming from the forks and dribbling down, note to self new fork seals at some stage.
So tomorrow dear diary I'm gonna stretch my legs a bit more, hey I'm on leave for one more day! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

MickeyX and I were at the Honda shop, and I heard wwwAAAAHHHwwwAAAAHHHwwwAAAHHH and looked up to the (visible) highway where a guy on a crotch rocket was riding an extended wheelie.  I say "DUMBAS$!" and roll my eyes.  ::)

...It then occurs to me that the young guys standing next to me, next to their crotch rockets, were waiting for the dumba$$es.  :o They gave me these looks of shock, like "Woah, women aren't, like, totally impressed with random acts of senseless stupidity?"   :D

yeah, we have boy racers. No, 'we' are not impressed.   ;) :D

Glad you had a good ride :D

Good to hear she has got rubber to the road again Hush. I know the feeling of a step forward and 2 back as I have experienced that quite a bit lately myself.
I would love to see those hoons suddenly slow down and people belting up when you pop up on the scene.
By the way, what was that fruit salad mix you said you were putting into your forks the other day. Cheers

That was into Jaffas GSX400, book said 50/50 fork oil and 10w/30 so I made it 25% 10w/30 and the rest fork oil, seems a bit light actually, forks bottom quite easily so maybe I shoulda used more 10w/30?
Siren has died on the bike, not that I used it but it was cool having it all wired up, will hunt down an other one or make a new circuit board for the old one.

Cheers Hush, my CBX400F is wait too soft in the front and even when the fork seals are changed she leaks. It is air assisted as well, and I am thinking of tossing the ATF oil and and going for a regular oil.

Yeah well I'm a bit miffed that a certain family member has not returned the video camera as I wanted to post a ride vid as promised earlier. >:(
I have rediscovered all those things I had forgotten as a car driver like railway crossings, pot holes, painted road signs, slippery white line, leaning when I corner, he he takes me back to 1971 when I bought my first bike a Suzuki AC50.
You either learned fast or spent time in hospital, in one section of my local cemetery I can't step in any one direction without standing on an old bike mate who didn't make it through their teens, such a waste of young vibrant lives with so much ahead of them they would never get to see or experience. :'(
I'm captain cautious when riding (the Top Gear equivilent of captain slow) and that probably saved me a few times, at least 3 times I should have been a goner but some how, not sure maybe instinct cos it wasn't experience, I dodged a bullet. :o
Wind is blowing a howling Southerly so my dreams of riding today are gone but I've managed to score another day off tomorrow so maybe then I can go exploring again. ;D

Strike my last comment, I got another hour out on the bike today, these new fangled riding jackets are awesome for keeping out the wind, beats the heck outa the white denim jackets we all wore in the early 70's.
Again the old girl went like a dream, it don't leak oil, not a spot on the ground when parked and the gas tap is even behaving its self, no gush of gas if I forget to turn it off.
Have the feeling I'd like a wider rear tire, the front is a new Metzler and since I got the air pressure right it is much better on corners but the rear let go on me at an intersection, probably I was sitting on the white road paint.
I think the balance is better since I removed the siren (it died) so may look to either fake it up or add a loud hailer on the other side to balance it.
I keep forgetting to take pictures as I'm having way too much fun......sorry! ;D

Well done sir

It took me about two months fixing leaks, chasing down electrical gremlins, and cleaning carburetors before my "basket case" became a dependable motorcycle.

But eventually it happens eh! ;D
It's hard to remember the basket case my son gave me as a birthday present, the motor was out and leaking, half the bits were missing and I knew nothing about the bikes history mechanically.
I got lucky when it all worked with minimal repairs and nothing major internally broken.
Just goes to show how well these old girls respond to so TLC and regular servicing (kinda reminds me of some of my past girlfriends ;D).

Geez hush, I think you have found that saftey item we all wish we had at times....

If the general populace on the road with you slow down and buckle up at the sight of your bike....
Wouldn't that mean they ACTUALLY NOTICE you???

Which in turn means you are MUCH less likely to get into a accident.
:)

gonna have to find an old copper bike with all the bells and whistles one day....

Dear diary: internet has been down throughout NZ for 4 days!!!! I need drugs.
Not much chance of a ride in the last week, hopefully tomorrow.
Only progress this week is a new pair of riding boots coming my way ($142) so I don't have to wear my Prison issue ones he he......I think the boss is wondering where those marks are coming from across the left toe! ;D
Kits set for siren arrived today, hopefully even with my terrible soldering I can get it to work and run it through the old original siren horn.
Hey Soos I think you are right, if you want people to keep an eye out for you ride a cop bike. ;D

Dear diary: soldered together the siren kitset, looks like Marti welded part of it, must get a lower wattage soldering iron.
Works sort of, doesn't have the balls the old siren had but at least I can reuse the old siren case and it will look OK.
Gonna make a small addition tho, 4 small switches on the back so I can switch between police/ambo/fire etc might as well use all the systems.
Need to get to Dick Smiths tomorrow and grab a 3v step to 12v thingy.......Mickyx would know. ;D
Good excuse to take the bike out for a spin ha ha........
