Start it, and if it doesn't get replies, you will know it was a bad idea....
The very first honda or first cb750? Clarification!!!
Alrighty, I'll start the ball rolling.Who was the first dealer in North America to import Honda motorcycles? (Clue: it wasn't a US dealer.)
I would have to guess it was Sears or Montgomery wards
Nick, is this prior to the American Honda Motor Corp in June 1969?
American Honda selected a small number of their successful motorcycles dealers to become their first Honda Automobile Dealerships - all of which were in California. Norm Reeves was appointed as the 6th Honda Automobile on March 26, 1970.
I first saw a Honda motorcycle at the legendary Big Bear Hare and Hound in January, 1959. Alan D’Alo (the magneto guy) had imported the bike, an experimental small production CL 70 scrambles/cross country racer with tubular frame, 19-inch wheels, Earles-type leading link fork, and a domestic “rotary” gearbox. With such a gearbox, you shifted down for first, down for second, down for third, down for fourth, down for neutral, down for first again. Get it? This positive neutral idea is great for stop light to stop light riding in crowded cities; but not for cross country races such as the world-famous 150-mile-long Big Bear. Imagine being in fourth gear, flat out, and shifting for fifth only to hit neutral, then stabbing again to get a gear and you find first!!! Oops…
Kihachiro Kawashima was selected as Executive Vice President and General Manager of American Honda Motor Company. Joined by seven employees, he opened a shop in a small storefront office on Pico Boulevard in Los Angeles. Its operating capital: $250,000. The date: June 4, 1959. The market sought: consumers wanting small, light, easy to handle and maintain two-wheeled vehicles.
American Honda's first model line included the C100 Super Cub, CB92 Benly Super Sport 125, CA95 Benly Touring 150, CA71 Dream Touring 250, CE71 Dream Sport 250, and C76 Dream Touring 300.The C100 Super Cub was the first Honda motorcycle sold in the U.S., eventually becoming the world's best-selling vehicle (30 million to date). As proof that the original concept and design was perfect is the fact that today's C50, C70 and C90s have only detail changes to set them apart from the machines of 25 years ago.
