it has recently come to my attention that our fine Scottish-in-America friend Andy750 might profit from some intensive absorption of our fine American customs and cultcha, such as it may be. and what better way to do this than watching American MOVIES!! (god forbid, i certainly wouldn't want him watching television....except perhaps a select few reruns from our childhood.) now we wouldn't want him to give up a perfectly good motorcycle season so perhaps we can help him with a 'to-do' list for the cold winter months when they return.
so come on people, sing out! what's YOUR list of good american movie and tv entertainment to help out our good friend andy?? and for those of you from around the globe, what is the quintessential american movie to you? we don't have to list the Academy Award winners...just a good ol' roundup of films that might be helpful.

Wow thanks for all the movie suggestions but what do you know Ive seen most of them....I was a huge movie buff when I was back in Scotland. This was one of the reasons I wanted to ride around America and see most of the places I had seen in the movies (like in Easy Rider I went to the 'diner" location and many other spots/followed the same route in the movie etc etc). I like to go see the locations (Dances With Wolves -Badlands) to get a sense of what the movie was trying to convery....Close Encounters of the Third Kind - Devils Tower, WY. etc etc...Texas Chainsaw Massacre....riding through some desolate spots in Texas - fast!

andy - and here i thought you travelled so much because you heard of a great diner "just down the road"! one thing leads to another and whaddya know, arizona is just around the corner. good food is a wonderful thing!

it struck me that we yanks oftentimes speak in a verbal shorthand, referencing verbal touchstones that are picked up from movies and some tv shows. not that there's anything wrong with that! (seinfeld). but perhaps i just need to get out more!

now having said that.....a few more good flicks for the road

If you want to annoy intellectual snobs in conversation take note of the latent social commentary in 3S's films. Classism, the Depression, role of the sexes, the plight of the whipped cream pie.
