Ok, a couple of weekends, but lots of progress. As we left you last, Hondaman had pointed out to me that my fork seals were upside down. So, I went back that next weekend, pulled my seals and I thought flipped them over…. Well, not quite, somewhere along the line, I put them back in their original positions, because, I did not refer to my original photos. Well, long story and many head-butts against a hard metal surface, they are now in correctly.

When using the All-Balls seals MAKE SURE THE RECTANGULAR “HOLES” ARE FACING YOU!!!!!!!!!! Yes, I am yelling this, but at myself, not you guys!

I then proceeded to time the Camshafts. Not a lot of pictures here, but you need to remember that getting the side covers on is paramount. On the intake side, the timing is easy, on the exhaust, don’t be afraid to manhandle the camshaft into position. BTW, Honda… your timing marks on my bike SUCK!!!!! But I got it despite you, and thanks to http://www.hondatwins.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=781, without which, your service manuals do absolutely no good….
Got it done, and life is good!

Shop Dog was very happy about the whole affair…

So after running the engine through some revs, I heard the wondrous “whoooosh” as the engine built up compression, but brilliant as we are, I forgot to set the valve clearance. I did hit 95 – 110 PSI without, so I am pretty hopeful…
So my buddy pointed out the hard work we did Zoop Sealing the Aluminium, that the stainless bolts looked dirty in the allen heads, so after much beer and bravado… we came up with this – the Q-tip has brake cleaner on it.

Works great, BTW….

Zoop Seal shows a lot of promise, BTW…

I got the engine together, here are some views…

Now. I have to set the Valve clearances, and then I have to learn how to weld, so that I can make the mounts for the 550 Seat. Once the brackets are welded, the frame and lower triple will get PC’d black and then the tins will be painted Candy Bacchus Olive.

Yes, I know... A whole year has gone by. I am just waiting to get a chance to get my swingarm out to Hondaman, and then to get everything to chrome/powdercoat/paint. I will get there. In the meantime, I have been repairing and tuning my other bikes. I did my fisrt carb synch on my '76 CB400, and I am looking forward to tuning all my bikes for the late Spring. Unfortunately, I am getting a my hip replaced Mid-April, so I won't be working - and certainly not riding for a while after that.

1st, make sure you have remoned the snap ring (I know, obvious, but just to be thorough...). Then take the end with the seal and let it sit in boiling water, or carefully heat the aluminum with a heat gun. It will expand and make it easier to get the old seal out. I used a puller, and was careful to protect the lip of the fork lower. But the key is to get that aluminum to expand

So, after a bunch of life stuff getting in the way, I am finally ready to get back to work on my 450. Better late than never. In the meantime, I have been keeping up on maintainance of my other bikes and various projects.

Now I am ready to bring all my parts in for Powdercoating/Chrome/Paint.

POWDERCOATING:

I will be using K&S Powderoating in Poughkeepsie, NY. I stopped by their facility this week, and was impressed with the work they were doing. They do come highly recommended by different shops in the area. They will take care of all prepping and covering of threads. If anyone has experience with them, i would love to hear it.

The frame will be done in a "sparkling silver" with various black accents and clear over some of the polished bits.

Question: What should I look out for in terms of keeping Grounding points on a CB450 K5 frame? I want to make sure that I can cover those areas prior to coating so I will not have to grind off the new powder.

CHROME:

If I chrome items like axels and motor mounting bolts, will I have a problem fitting them back in place? HOw about dealing with threads?

PAINT:

The tins will be painted Candy Bacchus Olive using Don's Paint kit. I am working on sourcing a K0 headlight shell for which will also be painted Olive.

Glad you posted today, Dagersh. Otherwise I would have missed this fantastic thread. I will be working on a '70 450 later in the season (once I finish my 400f) and your bike is quite the inspiration.
Can I ask what your budget has been for the build. It seems like you've saved a penny or two with elbow grease for sure...but I was curious. Keep it coming, Man! This is really great stuff.

Broshi - I used a seatmaker from Kingston, NY called Pirate Upholstery http://www.pirateupholstery.com/. Great guy, does really nice work. I brought 3 seats for him to use/model. First was the stock seat for the pan, second was a wrecked seat (really bad pan) for the chrome trim piece and lastly a stock CB550F seat for the shape. What you see in the picture is his interpretation of my ridiculous vision!

Dr. Lumen - Thanks for the kind words. My budget has not been as low as you would think. Although I am trying to use as much of the original bike that I can, different mistakes and plan changes have added up... To the point where I don't want to know! Besides, this is a learning task for me. Digging in to the 450 has given me a lot of confidence in working/fixing/tuning my other bikes - as a matter of fact, you and I are 100% reversed, I am finishing up repairs on my '76 400F to get her back on the road after sitting in a garage for the last 3 years. I learned how to adjust the valves, timing, Cam Chain (oops... kind of messed that one up! http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=85682.msg967823#msg967823) and synced the carbs. I am rebuilding/overhauling the front forks and brakes and finally replacing the snotty 4-to-1 pipes with an NOS unit I bought for it 3 years ago.

Back to the 450, I brought all the bits for PC in yesterday, and I will sort out my chrome pieces this weekend.

So I got my powdercoating back. It is pretty amazing. I had the guys at K&S Powdercoating in Poghkeepsie, NY. They are great to work with. Just make sure you bring a check or cash!

A couple more:

So, I did hit a snag. I am using the following brake pads, and I cannot get them to fit the caliper:

It measures at 29mm diameter. The old brakes also measure 29mm diameter, as does the bore of the caliper. I stripped the paint off the sides of the barke pad, and used the Dow Corning grease, but it wil not go into the caliper.

Questions:

Should I freeze the brake pad to reduce the circumference? If I do, won't the action of the brake pad be a problem after it expands on warming?

Has anyone used these brakes and had the same problems?

Nice powder, Gersh.

I have never heard of "Tufstop" brake pads, and as a rule am suspicious of things that are purposely misspelled. I most certainly would not freeze them like a bearing exactly for the issue you mentioned. The pad should fit well, but move smoothly. I use EBC's and have never had a problem. If they don't fit out of the box, and say that they are supposed to, I would try a different manufacturer. Hell, even the Emgo pads fit with no issues, and those are about as cheap as they come.

Just out of curiosity, did you have to have your cams re-surfaced? I'm a bit worried about the ones in my 450.

That is what I thought. I will call Dennis Kirk and see what they can do. EBC's is shall be!

I did not have the Cams resrfaced. Everything was in nice shape, and the new pistons did not require it.

FINALLY!!!! I am getting ready for my rebuild.

Here is how the paint and chrome came out.

Chrome Pieces

Tank with new chrome panels and new CB450 Emblems

Looks great on the "Candy Silver" frame

Headlight Bucket

Sausage Taillight

The body pieces were all painted Cady Bacchus Olive using Don's excellent paint kit.

The first step will be timing the engine and installing in the frame. I think I am now comfortable with how to peen the Master Link on the Cam Chain.

I have also had my Swingarm rebuilt by Hondaman, so that will be installed along with Stainless Steel - fully sheathed Hagon shocks from Dave Quinn.

Can't wait for the weekend!

Love that paint color. Also - great looking engine ! It's the little details. Black jugs with the edges of the fins silver. Usually I'm not a fan of black anywhere on the motor - but yours... just beautiful. Really looks great. Can't wait to see this thing put back together.

I had the chrome done at New England Chrome in Hartford, CT.

I am happy with the job, although, I am missing one Seat hinge pin that is AWOL.

I am sure it will turn up, or I will have them do another one.
