Read here to follow the timing can cam chain installation on the bike.

Any ideas, short of taking her apart again?

If that was my bike I would completely restore it and keep the original tank and all original parts.  It will be worth a lot more when finished.

You have a rare bike and restoring it would retain its value.

Lucky,

Thanks, but I am too far in already.  The original tins are shot anyway.

Any input on my valve problem?

Thanks,

Lots of redirection to a couple sites, but Bill's 450 site looks promising.  I'll give it a read tonight.

Oh No Gersh!
I was all set to start bugging you about my build, thinking you were all done.

One of my 450 motors does that ...the tappet doesn't seem to tighten. Luckily, that motor is still assembled. Let me know if I can help with photos of a factory motor. Might be able to re-assure you on those timing marks at least.

Spotted those seals, but you got it fixed already.

What I didn't know/expect was the torsion bar for valves, now that's a cool solution!

I know, I know, there is a universe or two of things I have zero clue about, but I like this one :)

BTW the russian tank T-55 had torsion springs used on catterpilar wheels - I bet you always wanted to know that   ;D

Doc - Thanks, but it looks as if the head need to come off again for tosion and tappet inspection.  Its weird because I did a thorough inspection upon disassembly, and even in the pics, they look terrific.  I never started the engine through its revolutions, so there is little chance I bent the valve stem - I was very sure not to force anything through.

Your motor that does the same thing...  does it run?

70CB750 - I love cool stuff like that!  Ever watchthat show on HD Theater about the guys who restore old tanks?  Its awesome!

Just to recap, here are the pics from the Valve and Torsion bar disassembly/assembly.  Can anyone see any obvious problems?  I soooo do not want to take the head apart again if I don't have to.

I did look over everything upon disassembly, and the followers were in very nice shape.  Shiny, the dark marks in the photos are from shadows.  I wish I had taken better close-ups.  Another lesson learned!!!

Thanks!

Sorry Dagersh, I'm not familiar enough with that model bike, let alone that type of valvetrain, to help out.  But I seem to remember seeing something weird with the procedure...  If it were me I'd just start doing the valve check step by step a couple more times.  Maybe you'll get that eureka moment.

Kinda with Fastbroshi on this...Are you sure nothing got missed in reassembly? I just pulled the valves in my "A" head today, and there really is only one way those components can assemble. Can it be that a rocker is on the old spline and not the new one? You've documented pretty well, it sure doesn't seem like you missed anything.

Ok,

Its been suggested that my CAM Follower may be worn, so I broke the chain and removed everything on the Intake CAM side of the engine.

Here are the pics, tell me what you think:

The Follower Surfaces look to be in great shape.  I can feel a slight groove, but the left side follower surface is no different.  The CAM lobes themselves are smooth and unworn.

All ideas are most welcome!

Nevermind...  the right intake valve is sticking a bit open.  Now I wil have to pull the head apart.  It may be bent.   ::)

Its a learning experiance, right?  Yes...  I will keep telling myself that.

I just recently joined this forum because of you dagersh.  Your work on the 450 has been inspiring and love the documentation.  I had a cb350f that I "put together" but never worked on the motor.  I had someone else do that for me.  I wasn't confident enough to tackle that one.  I dumped that bike on a twisty and ended up in the hospital and have not been on a bike since.

Now, I got bit by the bug again and I will be buying a cb450 k5 that is just a motor and frame.  The motor is seized and don't know if it is usuable, but you have inspired me to take on the challenge.  You rock gersh!  I will post a pic someday.

Yes, I am a bum!

I am finally getting back to the project.  The lack of snow in the Northeast (and the rest of the country, for pity's sake!) has kept me off the slopes with lots of garage time.

So in preparation for getting the wheels shoed with new Bridgestones, I built and trued the wheels with Jonsey's guide and my buddy who is a bicycle repair guy.  Side note, we are building him a SWEET CB200T that he got for $175!  The PO could not get it to run, we cleaned the tank and carbs, put in a new battery and, VOILA!, a sweet running CB200T!

But, I digress as usual.  I swear I need some Ridilin....

Anyway, here are some cool pics of the wheels:

New Brake Shoes from EBC.  It is important to note that the protective black paint needs to be cleaned off of the pivot points and from the round areas that face each other so that the shoes will go on smoothly.  I put a bit of copper grease on the pivot points in order to keep the action smooth, but not too much, you do not want to get it on the shoes or braking surfaces.

To those paying attention, the retaining plate is not installed over the pivot points - I need to get some new split pins to hold it on.....

Tomorrow the engine goes into the frame!!!!

Dagersh - I just read your thread from start to finish and took plenty of notes from your posts across to my CB450 rebuild file.

I reckon I am about a year behind you on my black bomber, but working on similar ideas and probably facing similar problems.

Thanks for all of your detailed posts, I may yet take on the engine rebuild myself now I have seen that it can be done!

Cliff.

Maduncle,

Awesome!  Bring that Bomber back!  Stay organized, and it really is not that hard.  Seriously, if i can do it, you can too!.

If you need anything, don't hesitate to contact me.

On another note, the engine is finally out of the workstand, where it has been for 2 years.  Where does the time go?  Its not in the frame yet, but it is lying on my lift on its left side, waiting for the frame to be lowered onto it and then attached.

Pics to come later today!

Most excellent! I enjoyed the entire build and can hardly wait to see it finished. I'm upstate full time, not far from you, and I'll be watching for your machine on the road this spring.  I was looking up a 72 450 thread last night to get some ideas for the 72 450 in my barn, when I came across your thread today. Excellent!
