So, after getting inspiration on how the carbs were looking, I wanted to try my hand at polishing the engine covers.  I had the sproket cover off many times, so I tore into that one first.  I originally attempted to see what a soda blast would do for the oxidized finish - but it did not do much at all.  I put my pieces in the sun until they were warm to the touch.  At the time, I had no Acetone on hand, so the black residue made the job harder.  When polishing, wiping down the piece with Acetone, will make your job so much easier, and you get a pretty quick idea of just how good your results are going to be.

Also, I was not using a mask, and I am seriously concerned about the fibers being thrown into my face, so I will be wearing one as well as safety goggles any time I am on the buffer.  Actually, I learned the relatively hard way to ALWAYS wear eye covering - a shot of carb cleaner in the face, up your nose and in your eyes is a wonderful cure for forgetting to done your safety gear....  Holy He!!, that hurt like a ...  well you know.  Fortunately, not real damage!

It would seem that the Starter Clutch Plate Grenaded inside the housing.  Ouch.....



Weird, though, the bike did not have any charging problems prior to the tear down.  It was pretty nasty in there, and I don't have a puller to get into it further.  Anyway, hopefully I can find the pieces and make the repair. Furthermore, the wires coming in from the harness, did not seem to be connected to anything.  Do they just make contact with the spinning copper windings?



I wanted to clean up the damage as best as I could, so I cleaned out the metal filings and detrached the Stator from the assembly.  Cleaning the rotor was no fun, as there were a ton of razor sharp filings stuck to the magnet...  I must say, I am having a blast!!!!

The Right Crankcase Cover that houses the Rotor and Stator and Starter Assembly cleaned up very nicely after getting rid of the grenade damage.  One of the problems i see on this bike was the PO's did not maintain it nicely.  All the gaskets are very brittle and and now I see why the bike was constantly pissing oil.  I sprayed the Seating Surface down with gasket remover and set it aside to bubble and foam.  While waiting for that, i pulled off the points cover to get the polishing treatment.  At this point in time, I had Acetone, and it really made it an easy job:

This took no longer than 5 minutes between the Tripoli and Rouge steps.  I then set the cover aside and went to work on that softened gasket.  Very carefully I used a sharp razor blade to lift the gasket off.  It was slow progress, and remembering a step from my modelling days, if I wanted to remove a molding seam from plastic, instead of leading with the blade, I pulled the blade towards me, dragging it over the surface.  it worked very well.

The dragging of the Razor over the surface, did not remove all of the gasket, and what was left was so thin, I was hesitant to try the sharp part of the blade.  So I threw the cover into the blaster.  The soda took it right off and left a very clean surface with absolutely no damage!  I am really loving this machine, it makes it very easy to get little things done, and it has instant gratification!

I still have to hit the polished parts with some aluminum polish, and carnuba wax, but they look spectacular..

I have always loved these bikes as well as the 750. Good progress you are making. I had a few of these that were between 69 and 74. Lots of get up and go power. The later 450's cant compare to the dohc 450's.

I have been using soda for blasting. Wish I had a cabinet to do it in. The driveway always looks like its been snowing! LOL. The up side to it...If I dont clean it up right away...and it rains...the driveway gets really clean and brighter after I power wash it.

I dont see the pics either. They just say moved or deleted.

So much stuff in the way of working on this bike.  I really wanted to have it done for Rice-O-Rama, but the best laid plans.... and all that.

Well, finally today I had a chance to work on something at least.  I cleaned and polished the caliper.  It was wicked disgusting, with slop the consistancy od Maple Syrup sitting beneath the piston.  Fortunately, the piston is in great shape, and the caliper cleaned up nicely, with special attention paid to the groove.  i used Denatured alcohol in conjunction with tin foil to clean out the interior.  I then decided I wanted the bodies polished so I quickly stripped the mottled paint with my trusty media blaster.  I use soda, and it fairly ripped the paint right off the caliper.  Lierally, it took less than 10 minutes to do both bodies and clean up the hard tube that runs from the caliper to the brake line.  I then put them all under the buffing machine, using Tripoli and then Rouge.  I am very happy with the results and will further the process with Simichrome and Mothers Aluminum polish.  I will continue on with a rebuild and polish of the MC.

Beautiful project.
Here's one cb450 k5, literally made from nothing. She was lying IN the ground for about 20 years, so there wasn't even one screw that was usable...
Friend of mine  invested enormous amount of work and money, in order to drive her on Vintage racing championship...
450's are fast bikes, but "Four" machines are far more endurable.

Hi All,
It’s been too long as usual.  Different projects in the way. 
Over the last couple of weekends I have thrown myself into the 450 project.
 


The bike has been stripped down and I am ready to remove the engine and prepare it for complete disassembly.
 


As you can see the chain sprocket area is a mess.  But it will be dealt with later on.



I took as much off the engine as I could to lighten the load to get it ready to put into the engine stand. 



The engine stand was purchased off of Ebay, and I have a second cradle for CB750 engines that fits into the base (you can see it hanging on the wall in the background).  The tool cabinet fits under my workbench, so I needed to make sure the surface stays flush when I am not using the engine stand.  To secure the stand to the base, I drilled out holes for 3/8” threaded inserts.  The bolts are 3/8” X 1” and the stand is very sturdy on the 1” base of the work surface.  Later on, I had to crank on some bolts and the stand worked great!



Here is the engine in the stand, secured by the mounting bolts that hold it to its frame.  It’s a bit high, but I think it will be good for getting to the bolts underneath.



As we were maneuvering the engine to the stand, this fell out…
It holds the lowest cam chain guide on the engine.  As it turns out, it was lost the last time the PO was in the engine…  I only hope it was benign as later pictures will show.

My buddy Lyman broke the drive train.  It was a B!7(!-!



A great tool – the Motion Pro Chain Breaker.  We did the Cam Chain and drive chain with it.





Meanwhile, here is the exhaust Cam…



The Rockers!  Cb450’s don’t have valve springs.  They move against Torsion Bars.
 


After a bit of a struggle, and a little easy banging with a screw driver and mallet…  one side is out!

Now for the valves…



My Tusk Valve spring compressor.  The Clymer manual will tell you to remove the torsion bars and then the valves.  I promise you it’s much easier to remove the valve first!  Much safer as well…









Using the 23mm attachment, and making sure the other end is secure in the dead center of the valve face, I slowly applied pressure to remove the holders.



Empty Head!  (Just like mine!)





At this point, when everything was out of the head, I hit it with some gunk to get the years of neglect off of it.  Worked Ok…







However, I figured my Soda Blaster could do much better..  and it did.

Remember, back when I took the stator assembly apart, the starter clutch had grenaded, leaving a mess of metal shavings.  Well….  The oil filter was full of them as well.  Strangely enough, the filter screen was relatively clean, and easily made spotless with some  Brake cleaner.

Oil Filter, Lock Washer and Thrust Washer.  I buggered the lockwasher, hopefully I can order a new one…  It might be salvageable if not…  how important is it to be REALLY strong?
All that metallic gunk is hopefully only the remnants of the Starter Clutch.  The other piece that came out of the engine was pristine, so I don’t think it was banging around doing damage.  But we’ll see.

   Cool to see the insides of one of those, pretty high tech for when it came out, torsion bars on the valves and all.  Do you have any pics of these pieces and how they work?

Hey FB,

The only dedicated pics I have are above, I will snap pics of the assemblies this weekend and post them.  Also, there will be more when I put her all back together.  I am going to attempt to follow Hondaman's Thought on the CB450 by grinding off one of the splines on the torsion bar, and setting them "tighter".  I think I will have to PM him for some more clarification on this!

I have also been talking with Marko Visacki, who helped his friend and fellow racer build and prep a 450.  On his reccomendation, I am going to bore 2mm over and install Kawi KZ1000R pistons and rings which are lighter.  This is the set up they are running, with much success and no mechanical issues.  Thanks Marko!

i've also heard of racers converting the heads over to use regular coil valve springs, not that i know anything at all about it other than that it HAS been done  :D

THR and M3 both make conversion kits for valve springs.  I am not sure what the benefit is, maybe just for racing.  However, Marko and his friend have been campaigning their 450 with only the overbored pistons and a free flow exhaust.
