Craigslist rant
« on: May 21, 2008, 07:14:05 PM »
I have tried to understand how craigslist "works" and here is how I have learned to understand it:

Looking for an item: You wil find the item you are looking for within the first call you receive. The other thousand calls/e-mails will be items that are not what you are looking for or people letting you know that they have one but are not interestested in letting you buy it. Or God forbd you ask a question, then they will never answer and most likey contact CL and ask to have you post "flagged for removal", Because we are silly in asking such questions and shouold let the CL gods guide our purchases.

Selling: Dont know. Are there people that do that on craigslist?

Buying: Remove the ad as soon when find what you want!

Selling: It works. You don't have the utter BS of ebay. Buyers tend to be local so you do a face-to-face deal with cash. You just tell long distance folks to F.O. unless they feel like driving/flying to you with cash on the chance nobody will beat them there.
Don't deal with the (plague of) scammers with checks or moneygrams or trades etc... and REMOVE THE FRICKING AD when the deal's done.

I use Craig's list a lot.  Sometimes I get calls within 10-15 minutes of posting.  I always include pictures.  As far as I am concerned, newspaper classified ads and Little Nickel-type advertisers are obsolete.  I'll buy off of ebay once in a while, but never sell there anymore.

I got my 77 400F in running condition for $400 on craigslist. Posted a wanted ad looking for a CB500. A guy down in portland, im 2.5 hours north of portland, emailed me saying he had a running 77 400F that he would let go for $400. Drove down the following day and came home with a running bike. By all means, not a perfect bike, but I've driven places and put 600 miles on it with only changing the plugs.
Got a 76 400F yesterday for $200 with original exhaust. Not running and may never run, but it's mostly there and has many parts I could use on my 77.

As far as I can tell, it's about finding deals and jumping on them, right away. No waiting around. You see something, you call right then and be on your way out the door asking him for directions. I've listed stuff and had it gone in 15 minutes with ten more calls just trying to remove the damn listing. Another good way to find stuff is to post wanted ads, which is how I found my 400F and many other items. That way you're not fighting with 10 other people over one item.

Selling, it's free, no paypal or ebay fees and you can usually find someone who will want anything.

I love craigslist. Too many people out there flagging stuff and it sucks when you can't figure out why, but it's pretty decent overall.

My main gripe is people who list things and then don't answer phone calls or emails. The 76 I got for $200 is a perfect example. It was listed and within 45 minutes I was onto it. I called the guy 10 times that night and two emails, no answer. He finally called me back next day and said he would call back at 2:30, at 2:45, I called him 5 more times but his phone was off. He finally called back at 6pm and was at his house 20 minutes later with cash in hand. Just sick of people wanting to sell stuff, but not wanting to actually sell it, making it more of a hassle to deal with morons than trying to get a good deal!

my first two times with CL were great, but since then it seems I have been cursed.

It seem that everyone here has had good experiences with it.

Maybe i am to particular in what I am looking for.
I think when I got flagged for removal it kind of rubbed me the wrong way since I did not see why it should of happened. Asking questions and such (silly me).

Man, I'm a huge CL fan, too.  I agree with just jumping on what you see, when you see it.

I agree with the simple common-sense approach to scammers, out-of-towners, etc.

I've bought & sold over 20 bikes, cars, motorhomes and furniture items and my inlaws sold their HOUSE over CL.

ebay is still good for scrounging hard-to-find parts, etc. and some consumables for bikes, etc.  But, I'll agree - the newspaper classifieds and nickle-type papers are right out.  $45 to list my bikes for sale for 10 days in the local paper?? C'mon, no way!

I'm working on a free alternative to ebay/craigslist for motorcycles and parts.
First one I do will be for the pacific northwest area.

A seller will have to answer a lot of questions to post their sale, so that people can really narrow down what they are looking for.

2 of the most important will be 'titled' (y/n) and 'currently running' (y/n)

Let you know when I have something up. Could be another year, though.

I just hate weeding through all the crap in craigslist.
No.

Craigslist (at least for me) has to seriously be one of the best things ever bike wise. I have gotten ALL of my bikes from craigslist. Whenever I post wanted ads I ALWAYS get tons of good leads. The cool thing about a wanted ad is that people browsing might come across it and say "Oh, I have on of those taking up space" which is nice not to have to scramble and fight other people for it.
   This pretty much sums it up.   76' CB592 cafe. 69 750 project, 03 CBR954, 75 750 super sport.
