HELP!!!!! Can Someone Please Decode This Vin Number For Me?
« on: August 22, 2005, 01:57:47 PM »
This is my 2nd day here and I would lying if I said I'm experienced with the CB750 although I do love the bike and have owned a few in the past. I'm currently the owner of 3 bikes with 2 of them being Hondas. My question is probably pretty simple for the pros on this board. The bike I'm thinking about buying according to the owner who's trying to sell it to me is a 1974 CB750E. I researched the vin to the best of my ability and I feel that it's a 1975 CB750K5. What models of the CB750 were available back in 1974-1975? What is the best way to tell the difference between the models? I've attached a picture of the VIN number to remove all doubt. The bike is from Georgia and being that it's older than a 1986 they don't require the owner to have a title (confirmed by my local county court clerk). The registration card labels this bike as a 1974 but I think if my decoding is correct it's a 1975. Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA Paris

There is no such thing as a CB750E. That is the prefix of the engine number, so probably the PO was misleaded. There are plenty of webpages out there where you can find the span of serial numbers that comprises a given series. Sorry I don't have any Honda identification book, maybe somebody out there can help.

Appears to me that it is a CB750, 1975 model, built in 8/74. The frame number (which you showed) is the number it must be titled under. IF the p.o. titled it with the CB750E number (found on the top of the bottom end of the motor, under the left hand carb) that's only the number of the engine, and you may run into problems at the DMV. I have in the past.
To answer the rest of your question, it is specifically a CB750 K5. The F model was available in '75, but you don't have it.

Chris is absolutely correct in that your bike is a K5.  The VIN on the tag in the picture should also match the VIN stamped into the left side of the headstock (opposite the tag).
