A/F RATIO?
« on: June 03, 2008, 06:41:11 AM »

How do you make sure your A/F ratio is OK?  i know the plugs need to be brown, but other than that?

I have to install two weber IDF 40 on the GoldWing(1976) of my brother and i want to be sure his bike is well tune.

The very best way to do it is find a dyno with ega (exhaust gas analyser) and do a fuel setup run.
any 'real' dyno operator knows how to do it and it will save you many frustrating hours.
If you get it reasonably close first you shouldn't have to do too many runs. (I find that even a single run will give me enough information to find out where I'm going wrong)
You can also set it up for max power (11.5~12.5:1 air/fuel) or max economy 14.5~16:1 A/F)
I always thought I could save some cash and sett things up the old way but electronics saves so much time its worth it.
I think I'm going to contact my brother in Britain and see how much 'hobby' EGA is, Gunson used to make a reasonable one cheap. With a voltage inverter to power it, it should be possible to bungy it to seat and just ride 'normally'?
Glad you brought the question up, got me thinking how to save cash again  ;D ;D

 Quick edit.
Just did a quick search, Gunson still do  CO2 analyser, Norther Tool has them.
They have gone up in price quite a lot though, $220.00.

I'd be interested in hearing more about that setup.  Are the carbs adjustable?  Does the manifold have a common plenum?  This "car carb" mod was somewhat common for the early Wings, but I hadn't heard of a dual carb setup.  Mostly two barrel carbs.

Yeah, going rate seems to be about $50.00 per 'run' around here, (usually 3 to 5 dyno pulls to get average) not sure how far away and how much 'they' would charge where you are?
Friend in Kentucky was charging $150.00 to adjust carbs to engine, didn't include labour to remove and fit new jets if needed though  (he was 'finding' between 7~17 hp on bikes with new pipes, air filter, etc)
Its really useful for the fine tuning.
I see your in Canada, most shops would be willing to deal in the winter time when things are slow (fixed price to do carb setting runs) but as summer is here they probably get busy so want to charge going rate?

In looking at the website, I don't see a way to sync the carbs.  Each carb would seem to me to be in sync with itself, but getting left and right synced might be difficult.  Not that they're not adjustable, but I don't see a tap for a sync tool.  And the fact that they use different size jets like the stock ones doesn't look good either.  The early conversions were much better in that a single carb doesn't need to be synced, and most car carbs used adjustment screws for A/F.

This is what we use to sync the carbs,

How does it work?
I've seen that type and I thought they had to fit onto carb intake?
It uses a flap valve doesn't it, similar to early style mass airflow sensor.
I use a set of Honda gauges.

Interesting.  Do you need one for each carb, or do you switch it around?

It's not possible to use on bike with air box or a lot of space behind carbs  then?

Those air/fuel gauge are useless...we call them christmas tree  ;D they are not wideband gauge,so the reading is not good,if you want a little bit of color in your car thats the gauge
to buy  ;D but if you want a "real" A/F gauge buy this one,

http://www.aempower.com/ViewCategory.aspx?CategoryID=67

Take a look at the price...theres a big difference between them!

Interesting.  Do you need one for each carb, or do you switch it around?

No,just one,

You have a better reading with velocity stack mount on them,if you have an air box you need to remove it.
