Saved my ass today
« on: May 25, 2008, 09:16:35 PM »
Last couple of days there has been a funny clunking sound when taking off in 1st. Nothing huge, just a little different sound.

Kind of like the old 45ft wooden boat....what's that noise, what's that smell, do you hear that?

Today I decided to take a look at the main sprocket.
Saved my ass............. the bolt on the sprocket had become loose....... very loose. ;D
Amazing how in tune you can become with a machine.

P.S. I don't own a cell phone, not one in the family. I just try and fix it. :)

Perfect example of why it's good to be spiritually in tune with your machine as well as it being mechanically in tune, you know, the sort of Zen thing that Prisig makes such a big deal about.  So many drivers would be completely oblivious to things like this until it's too late.

Nice save.

Good catch.  +1 what Mystic said.  Another good reason to work on your own stuff.

When my main sprocket was loose it was dribbling oil all over the garage floor.  The only thing holding it on was the clip that you bend around the output shaft.

I kept replacing the "leaky" shifter shaft seal and cursing when it didn't fix the oil problem.  Then I got some sense and torqued down the front sprocket bolt, and viola the oil leak magically went away!  ;D
