Lunchtime quickie.....clutch steels
« on: May 23, 2008, 10:52:23 AM »
After reading this post:  http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=29374.0

I decided to take out my clutch and double check the steels, friction discs etc.  Been having a little trouble finding neutral.   Also put some addtional holes in the basket for better oiling.

On the clutch steels...should the "cut/sharp" edge (the sharper edge vs the rounded/stamped edge) be facing
TOWARD the engine or AWAY from the engine ?

Thanks in advance.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

Im just guessing but I dont think it matters as long as you have a steel then a plate then a steel etc

I don't think it matters as long as they all face in the same direction.

My understanding of this is as follows, when the plates are stamped out, they end up ever-so-slightly dished.  So, having them all pointing in the same direction gives you this:

((((((((

instead of this:

)((())()

which makes things work ever-so-slightly better.

I know this is going to sound odd but what weight oil are you using? I finally fixed my clutch problem by switching to 30W oil.

You got a lunchtime quickie???? Sheesh.

The "sharp" sides were originally facing the engine. But, like Magpie said, so long as they all go the same way, no matter.

The few times I have had a lunchtime quickie, clutch plates would have been the last thing that crossed my mind.....  ;D

Still in the honeymood phase ;)

Fresh oil & some extra holes in the basket seem to do the trick.  Thanks fellas
