I'd like to play around with paint schemes on my bike with the computer.

What would be a good program for doing this with??

We need to know what kind of computer you have? Also do you have access to photoshop? And what kind of things would you like to do?

The Gimp is an open source (free) program that's similar to photoshop.

Computer is a clone I put together,

ASUS A7V400-MX Board

AMD 1659 Mhz processor

only 512 on the memory (i need more memory I'm sure)

probably way out of date by now.

I don't have photoshop and mostly what I'd like to do is change color schemes on
cars and motorcycles in the pictures so I can see the effects different schemes have.

A Mac OS X Clone? I also build Mac clones I'm not sure if thats what your talking about though   :P

Anyways I would go with Gimp IF you can't get you hands on photoshop  ;) ;) ;) Just because photoshop is an awesome program. Actually if you have a Mac I can mail you a copy of Photoshop even, just let me know. If you want to just change hue and saturation you can use preview (if your on mac) or pixelmator is a light weight cheap alt. to photoshop as well.

Another thing I started doing as a result of sketching(by hand) the basic's over and over again of the bike when I'm just trying to draw a different tank only for example. I simply take a good side shot... non complex image of my bike I want to use and take a eraser/white pencil(computer tools not hand) to the tank and blank the tank/seat/ whatever out I plan on modding and printing them out. This allows you to draw and even color in what ever you want and get a real easy mock up. Need another copy instead of spending an hour on the comp making a new image or drawing your whole bike out by hand for a tank or seat option. This method proves to be really handy. I'll upload a pic when I'm on my main computer of the one I did asap for ya.

Hope this helps, thanks for filling us in with the comp info.

Not a Mac but thanks for all the info on how to do it!

I fooled around with Gimp last night and I sorta started to figure it out.  ;)
