HELP- cracked the clutch spring plate. NEED ANOTHER
« on: May 26, 2008, 05:03:31 PM »
I was installing a new clutch in my 1978 CB 750f and broke the clutch spring plate (I think that is what it is called).  I was using a torque wrench to the prescribed 6-7 ft lbs and one side cracked.  I was alternating tightening them as per the manual.

I need another spring plate, as well as the bolts.  They all stripped out when i was removing them.

If you have one for sale please let me know.

Dave

I did the same thing years ago but didn't discover it until I went for a rebuid of the bike.  The clutch always dragged and I had to actually kick it loose before starting the engine.  The broken part was later found when I opened the clutch compartment years later to get it back on the road.  I think what I did was trap a loop of the spring under the plate and it broke when I torqued it down.

Take Care

If I remember corectly the lifter plates are model dependent. Late model K's (77 and 78) and the late F's will interchange....not early ones.

If they break, it is usually due to not having every thing aligned before tightening.

An older Honda guy I now showed me to put in 2 longer bolts facing towards you and pull it all into place before tightening.

Yup broke mine as well ;D

Cross reference the part numbers.

Last one I broke was because the kid at the parts counter sold me the wrong springs. Apparently for a DOHC 750 - slightly too long. Wanna buy them? I figured out what happened when I broke the second one carefully using a torque wrench no less and torqueing in sequence too. I felt really stupid when the second one went. Lesson learned.

No matter how you tighten they do not all  touch at the same time.

So the trick is to let none of them get out enough to  let the lifter plate bend to the yield point.

So I usually only go about 1/4 turn per bolt at a time, dont need a torque wrench, except maybe when they bottom.

Dont feel bad about breaking it, pretty common..
