How hot do headfins get?
« on: May 26, 2008, 10:06:27 PM »
Always wondered about this..

Had an.. er mishap with another 750 back in 75. I was wearing jeans and I still have the imprint of the headfins on my calf. In other words, I got branded. :o

You can still count the number of fins.. I know he was doing about 105 just before he hit me, probably got slowed to about 95 or so. I can see getting burnt by the fins if the bike was laying on you, but I am pretty sure we were not in contact more than a second or two...

So i have to conclude, the fins were pretty hot..

Anyone else had  a bike leave its mark on you??

My bike's got those highway pegs and when I put my legs up there I have to be careful they don't rest on the engine.

If they rest on the engine, the heat begins to bother me in about 10 seconds, or so.

If the fins are hot enough to boil water, they're too hot. IME

In my first few rides on my CB550 my left leg got a little lazy and i got a nice row of lines burnt into my leg. But i was wearing shorts like a idiot. (like i said it was in my first few rides)
You can see about 3 1/2 lines or so.

As for normal operating temp of the fins i wouldn't know. I imagine that they are supposed to get hot so that air can transfer around them to cool the whole engine though...

I've got a few brands from bikes from when I was younger.  They're hard to see now, but they're still there.  Just oval burns from mufflers.

I once got a brand from a golf club.  It wasn't even hot, just swung hard.  MacGregor backwards on my knee cap.  I still have an indentation from where the shaft meets the club face met my kneecap.  Still hurts 15 or so years later if I sit too long.  Moral of the story, drunk people can't hit a pinata with a golf club, so don't get in their way.
