Novice at wiring/electrical help needed!!!
« on: May 26, 2008, 05:01:34 PM »
Hello all, here's the skinny. I'll try to be brief, but will try to explain indepth.

The other day after I got the carbs working perfect, I took my lady friend to the movies. As we were pulling into the movie theater, I hit a bump and the bike just died. I pulled out the way and looked over the bike after trying to kickstart it without success.

I noticed that the fuse had blown so I walked to the grocery store and replaced the old one. With the bike just in the on position and all lights on, I noticed smoke coming from the wires for the tailight setup. I immediately turned bike off after.
Apparently the connectors were touching the fender causing the wires to ground.  ??? Must of been from having a passenger on for the first time and the weight caused the wire to seperate slighty.

I did some rewiring and at least got the top runner, brake light, and turn signals working. I went to the movies without much concern and home to deal with the issue in the am.

When I got up in the morning I noticed my battery was not holding a charge. I previously had the stator changed due to the same issue. Charging system was checked out and was determined to be ok. Only thing needed was a stator, as they said it was reading 1.0 on the digital multimeter. They changed it out to one that was reading only .8 which they said was close to normal of .7, is this true?

I would have my headlight on and it would drain out my battery which would eventually cause my engine to die. Could this be the same problem? Also they changed out my fuse set up to the newer square uses and installed a 30 amp fuse. Is this set up ok as well? I have attached pics to take a look at for any wiring guru's.

I just came in from checking the stator on the multimeter and it is registering 1.1 out of the sites for the plug ins. The battery is charging up to appr 14 v with lights off. This of course is when I rev up the rpm's to about 3000. With lights on it is going to about 12.8-12.9 but slowly drians down to the 11's.

Does this sound pretty much like another bad stator? And if so could the grounding of the tail light wires have caused the stator to fry?

Was the stator completely disconnected when you checked it?

I disconnected it from the plug in at the side panel and checked from the plug in

I was reading some threads about headlights. Since I'm running halogens which I believe are 55/65 could this be causing my extreme drainage on battery? Still don't know if the stator is the main issue.

Any advice regarding stator is greatly appreciated. Meaning could grounding of tail light wire cause frying of stator? What is the correct resistance for stator once disconnected at the plug ins on side panel? As well as is it ok to have the fuse setup as in pic without issues?

No grounding can cause stator to go bad but bad grounding of green wires will stop regulator working properly and charging battery fully, ALSO it dont charge with normal lights till over 3,000 rpm and with Halogen even higher
