Bought a 500 today
« on: May 24, 2008, 07:52:40 PM »
My wife and I took a 2-up ride a month or so ago, first time since college (you might remember this from the "holy crap there's a body in the road" thread.  Anyway, the next day she's wanting a bike of her own.

I've been looking every day, missed a few good ones on off of craigs list.

This one pops up yesterday and I bought it this morning for $450 with some spare parts.  I'm thinking I got a good enough deal, but time will tell.  Should the engine number be a 550 series or a 500 series?  Mine starts with a cb550, so I'm making a wild assumption that someone dropped a 550 in a 500 frame.

Anyway, it appears that the classic wiring meltdown occured due to dirty contacts (they were severely oxidized);  the wiring to the rectifier was compeletly melted, as was the ground to the headlight bucket.  There was a bit of half-ass repair done by someone, probably the previous previous owner.

Bike came with the subharness for the electrical panel, so I replaced it, re-built the melted wires and cleaned up most of the connectors.  Rectifier check out according to the dmm.

Tomorrow is cleaning the layers of grease and barn off the thing (seriousy, hay and spider egg sacs) under the sprocket cover and in the headlight bucket). I still need to put the right side controls back together, and hopefully I'll have time tackle the carbs.

So, so far I'm looking for a right side cover in metallic orange.  anyone?  Oh, and the exhaust is going to have to go.  I'll probably just pony up for something decent.

Since pictures are the first order of business, and if you've read this far you deserve to be rewarded.  Here's what I've got so far.

Nice.  Yeah, someone put a 550 engine in it.  Check the bracket for the clutch cable on the frame by where the cable goes into the engine and make sure it's up to the job as they would have had to put one on or fabricated something DIY for it.

thanks dusty, I'll check that out tomorrow morning.  The wife's back visiting family, maybe I can have it running by the time she's back (hope springs eternal).

Even when not "collectably right", seems like a killer deal!

I bought a used car for my wife a few years ago. Freshly painted. Spent a few afternoons fixing some things, like a broken fan switch, broken sunshield holder, blown idiot lights etc.

On the first week she cut short a corner in the garage and dented the whole right side of the car against a pillar.

Has your wife ever been interested in bikes, or does she want one so she can share an interest with you? It is important to know in order to assess how much time and money you should put on the bike. In the latter case, you just have to wait until she lose interest, and then is when you get the bike for your and start to put money and time on it....  ;D

Raul,

She's always enjoyed being on the bike when we're riding together.  I'd definately say that she doesn't want it just for something to do with me, she wants it for herself.  If it turns out to be a passing fancy, well there's always profit to be made on craigs list/ebay (or breaking even).

If not I sure hope your not planning on teaching her.....

"Collectably correct", thanks for the "correction"  ;D

I'm with kghost. I have never had patience to teach my wife playing guitar, parking or using the computer. Not even when we were dating -and having sex depended very much in being super-nice-  ;D

MSF is a great idea!

Not only is it a good course, I think it saved some strain on my marriage.  I'm not sure how well my wife would've taken instruction or criticism in the beginning.  MSF gave her a foundation to build on.  Now, when I say 'let your bike lean into the turn' she opens the throttle.  ;D

Of course, we also got pulled over for speeding the other day with her leading!  :o
Yep, the officer said we were doing 38 mph in a 25 mph zone.  ::)

You're in for great fun.  Ride safely!
