Topic already beaten to death?!?!
« on: May 28, 2008, 01:18:58 PM »
I know the gas tank rust issue has been beaten to a pulp. However, here is my issue.

I am waiting for the Por 15 liner to get to me, may take a few days. I have an old Kreem liner peeling in my tank so I figured what the hay, I'll go ahead and get the prep work out the way.

I bought both the works (2 28 fl oz bottles), evaporust (32 fl oz) as well as acetone (1 gallon) and lastly some aircraft remover (1 quart).

I just want to make sure that I am checked and balanced correctly  :)

I am going to try and strip out the old liner with the aircraft remover. If that doesn't work I will attempt the acetone, which hopefully won't be necessary.

I then will use the works to get out all the heavy rust, rinse and then use the evaporust, rinse and dry out then apply some acetone to make sure tank is completely rid of water. I bought some wd-40 and some 2 stroke cylinder oil.

Will the wd-40 be sufficient to assist with rust inhibiting or is it even necessary after the evaporust? As well If I use the wd-40 is the oil necessary? Keep in mind I'm waiting on the liner to get to me which will be a few days. I know I bought a lot of products, but oh well, just wanted to make sure I handled all areas.

Lastly does a liner need to be done if no flash rusting is present?

Thanks for your patience and yes all jabs are welcomed. I'm sure they are to come. I have read all threads that my head is spinning, so I said what the heck. Need some type of piece of mind before my head explodes  ;D

Okay, first, I don't think either of those things will easily remove Kreem. MEK is really the only good solvent for dissolving that liner; remember that the liner is designed to resist gasoline, which is already a very potent solvent. Second, you don't need to use acetone to ensure the tank is completely rid of water; the WD-40 will do that for you. Dry the tank with a hair dryer and then coat it with WD-40 if you want to keep flash rust from forming. The 2-stroke oil will not be necessary.

Flash rust isn't the end of the world, FYI, if you're just leaving the tank uncoated. But if you're going through all this work to strip out the old liner, it's not much more work to POR-15 it, which will last until the end of time.

Thanks Bistro...

I read that somewhere about MEK, but when I called the POR 15 rep, to my suprise he said that either aircraft remover or acetone should be able to do the job. If doesn't work I will try the MEK. Where do you buy that stuff anyways?

I'm gonna leave it uncoated til I get the Por 15 liner. Just didn't know if it would be safe for my carbs. I already have two in-line fuel filters in. Wanted to still ride til I got it, however.

You can get MEK at Home Depot, Lowes, etc.  It's really strong stuff, so don't get it on your paint.

I'm sure they'll have it labeled as M.E.K., but it's methyl ethyl ketone if you want to know it's real name in case you have to explain what you're looking for to the clerk.

Acetone works about the same as water.  I wasted $30 learning that little tidbit.  Oh yeah, don't listen to all of the warnings about MEK.  I worked in the MEK unit of an oil refinery for about a year and, as you can see in the picture, it didn't hurt me one bit. ;D ;D

Don't know if the MEK made you look worse or better??  ;D

Well, I guess I'll try the aircraft stripper then. Crossing fingers :-[

Just applied aircraft stripper and within minutes disolving old kreem liner. Only applied half of the can and sloshing it around. Have to be careful when opening fuel cap as chemical mixture causes pressure in can. Will update as I go along.

Hey, that's good info.  I've got a kreemed tank and want to eventually get rid of it.  I thought MEK would be my best hope, but if aircraft stripper goes pretty quick I'll use that.  For now, the kreem is holding fine, but at first sign of failure, it's gone.

Yea.. It's almost all disolved and then I will apply the works and let that do its job. After that I will rinse and use Evaporust.

All the Kreem is gone!!!

Letting The Works do the works! As soon as I placed one bottle in all the rust nearly disappeared. I have some touch areas that I'm letting soak right now. Doing the rotation thing to make sure all is well. \

Will keep you posted. ;D

No need for MEK. Just use aircraft stripper. Does the trick with no problem. Just used 1 quart.

Update...

After rinsing The Works out about 3 times with garden hose and removing the screws out of the tank, I applied Evaporust into the tank. Let it set in the tank and swoshing around about 1 hr. and used screws in tank just to make sure all rust was removed out of nooks and crannies.

Rinse, once again about 3 times. Drain, then shook most of the water out. Never air drying or heat drying to allow flash rust to set in.

I rinsed out the tank with 2 cups of acetone about 3 times to dry water out with chemical reaction instead. Sprayed in some WD-40 with most of the acetone evaporated and WALA, Pristine tank! I then went ahead and poured in 93 octane gas. Doesn't look bad yet and had no rust return.

Highly recommend these steps to remove any polyurethane liners, (namely Kreem). that are becoming trash and to clean rust out of tank.

I may wait to put in the liner as a winter job, since I seen others on here who haven't used a liner after cleaning it properly and still say no rust in tank. If I start to see rust coming in, I will use the POR 15 once it gets here.

Basically a $25 cleaning job. Hope this helps others out there still struggling with the gas tank rust blues.

Any questions, don't hesitate. I'll try to help to the fullest.
