final stage --message for MRieck
« on: May 30, 2008, 09:51:12 AM »
I'm putting new fork seals in my 500K. An earlier thread says that the chamfer on one edge of the seals should face UP.

My seals are from pyramid parts in the UK, and they don't have any significant markings on either side.

Is this correct?

BTW, MRieck, the screws came today. Should I install them with the old washers until the new screws come to be used with the new washers you sent?

 I'd use the new washers.

There should be markings on the seal that you can read after installation.  Usually, only one side is marked.

Perhaps these are different seals, but all the ones I've installed had an open side and a closed side and you could see a small coil spring going all around in the open side. The open side faces the oil, the closed side faces the outside world. If there's no open side, the sealing lips should have a saw tooth shape that scrapes oil one way, this should scrape oil back into the fork.

Exactly. That's way all the OEM ones I've seen are installed

Many moons ago there was an english firm who designed "leak free" seals which had ridges arround the outside and "floated" in the slider case, no garter spring just tight fit on steel leg. Course that meant the slider had to be undamaged and clean as well as steel tubes good. Needless to say didnt work well due to owners/numbnuts mechanic damaging sliders removing seals and so wernt on the market long but perhaps the idea has been revived

Leak Proof Fork Seals.  Still available although I didn't find their site on Google.  In the US Dennis Kirk sells them.  They are a floating design and press in with your fingers.  I have them on my GL front end which actually has new fork tubes.  They claim low stiction but I don't have any way of doing a before and after comparison.  Seems to be a good bit of stiction even after a careful fork tube / axle / triple tree alignment.  They don't leak and are a breeze to put in though. . . . .
