Electrical question- SSM Unit?
« on: May 29, 2008, 05:22:45 PM »
What is it? Why can't I find it on my wiring harness? I searched briefly this morning, and came up with dead ends with every wire that was supposed to go to it. Maybe I'm missing something?

Should post your bike model and year.

The Starting Motor Safety unit is on 74 an 75 model CB550s.  750's too, I think.

SSM's appeared on the CB750 in 1973.

Right- That would help, I guess. It's a '76 CB550k. The SSM Unit on the wiring diagram shows 5 wires going to/from it:
Red/Yellow
Red/Dk Green
Red/Lt Green
Black
Green

The only thing (on my harness) that I can find that has both Red/Dk Green and Red/Lt Green wires going to it is the starter solenoid, but that only has two other terminals. Plus, I assumed the starter solenoid is the "Starter Magnetic Switch" on the diagram.

There's also a weird little two-pronged thing I can't identify that has a Red/Dk Green and Red/Lt Green wires going to it. Can't seem to find it on the diagram.

Ha, I must sound so lost. I think I have a handle on most of the other stuff now, at least.

Just taking a stab at this, but it looks like either the wiring diagram you have could be incorrect, or your bike has a later 550 wiring harness as it looks like you have the later starter safety system that just used a diode in the starter solenoid circuit. (Someone can probably help confirm or disprove this...)

The 76 wire diagram is different from the 74-75 diagram for the 550's.  You are going to be confused with several things, using the wrong diagram for your bike.

This site has a Honda shop manual PDF somewhere.  The 76 diagram is in one of the supplements added towards the back.

Your bike never had a SSM.  It has a simple diode to keep the neutral light from coming on when you pull in the clutch.  The starter switch wiring is different, as well as the solenoid connections.  Other things, too.

I finally found the correct diagram for my bike. Anyone else looking for the wiring diagram for a '76 CB550, go here: http://www.cryscom.nb.ca/Documents.htm and download the Honda CB500/CB550 Shop Manual. The diagram is on page 172 of the manual.

This cleared up a lot of confusion, as the Clymer manual does not include the correct diagram.

Thanks Jonesy and TwoTired. TT, I don't know how you fit all this obscure knowledge in your brain, man.
