Measure the hole (can't remember the size) and use an automotive engine frost\oil galley plug. Works wonders.
When the majority of the United States population get to be 70 years old, they will finally realize what is really important. And by then it'll be too late.

otherwise know as core plugs
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

take the old starter apart and use the front part with the gear to plug the hole, you can cut the gear off if you want to save weight, you can also use the front part with mounting holes and the rear part so you can bolt on the chrome cover. The cover will not bolt on with out it.
I'll try and send you a pic latter on this weekend or Monday.

Ah now welch plugs are just dished discs that fit up to a counterbore step and you "ding" the centre to enlarge the outer diameter and seal them, Core plugs have a raised lip and are a tight fit in the hole

they make rubber "core plugs" for engines. they're a big cylindrical rubber plug with a thick metal washer on one side with a bolt and nut sticking out (any automotive store sells 'em).

measure the hole and get the largest size plug that will fit in the hole (the tighter the better). insert it into the hole and tighten the bolt until the plug won't move. i did this mod 6 or 7 years ago to my bike when i cacked the starter, works like a charm. the only thing you have to figure out is what to do with the starter hole. i glued my starter cover down with a very small bead of ultra black rtv. i might pull it back off to put some "place holder" bolts and nuts through my starter cover to replace the functional items... maybe i'll snap a pic if i'm feeling spunky later today.

that rubber thingy looks like it'll work. been driving  without the left cover for a bit now so not worried about the starter cover but will work on getting it back together. gotta order  one of those stainless stell screw sets first.

here it is:

1. plug hole with expandable rubber freeze plug. *note: this one is about 6-7 years old, never leaked*

2. put bolts and nuts to fill old starter holes.

3. retain old gasket for height and stiffness (mine was missing a chunk)

4. RTV the mother down

5. carefully place over hole.

6. forget you ever had a starter.

7. beer.

Aluminum plug with an O-ring is what many used..

Bend a piece of flatbar and fasten to a tapped hole inside startercover..tap the upper end..Now you can take the starter cover  on and off and stash things in there.. ;D

I think I had a set of coils in there on one bike, then ran my red plug wires through the cylinders, then up to the plugs..very clean looking..

Just read the post about the CyclExchange charging system. They seem to have some kind of plug. Perhaps they could cut loose some of these.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

I saw a guy put his battery in the starter hole, a smaller battery but it looked cool.
I turned mine into a crank breather filter.
Aww the options, you can use it to stash your weed on camping trips.
