Newb saying Hi from NY
« on: May 31, 2008, 07:41:04 AM »
hello all, great forum you have here. Just got myself a '76 CB550 for a cafe project. looking forward to the knowlegde here to help my build. I've been riding since I was 7yrs old, but have been without a bike for the past 5 yrs due to college and the like. picked up the CB550 for $300 with a wiring gremlin and mysterious oil leak......hopefully I can get her running over the course of the next week. I'll post pictures in the next few days, she's a bit pitted and lightly rusted, and the previous owner painted the tank flat black.

I guess the story is he lost the key, cut the wires off the ignition, taped them together, and when the battery died hooked the bike up to his car to jump it and it didnt work after that. He said he called the local honda motorsports dealer and the tech said probably just a fuse, but without the key he couldnt open up the seat to pull the battery and check. when he went out in the spring after letting the bike sit since fall in the garage, almost all the oil from the crankcase was sitting on the floor underneath. I'm hoping it was a loose drain plug or something. Guess i will find out after i get the wiring straightened out and have it running to see where the leak is coming from.

Welcome from NY. Looks like you have your work cut out for you.

Man you USA guys get some bargains.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Welcome from upstate. Good luck on getting it going quickly. I'm with you on hoping the oil leak is something like a loose drain plug or hose. Given the previous owner, it would seem that anything would be possible.

Im pretty stoked about finally getting a cafe project....thanks for the warm welcome, ill be asking plenty of questions.

In my experience, the seat key is matched to the ignition key. On the other hand, the seat key isn't as picky as the ignition key, so you may get lucky. Do a search; I doubt this isn't the first time this has come up.
