Honda leather coated covers?
« on: June 13, 2008, 10:53:44 PM »
My stator cover and points (I know I don't have any but I'm old fashioned OK) cover are painted if that's the right word a brownie grey which I could live with.
However both have the appearance of leather especially around the front I guess where engine heat from the pipes would be hottest.
Is this common or did the PO use house paint or something as hideous on them.
Secondly, how do I clean them back to metal I guess, they truely are hideous eh!
I'm really a Suzuki guy trying to understand my Honda, Suzi never painted anything so this confuses the hell outa me.
Can I rub them back to polished metal?
How is it best to do this?
Come on I need something to keep me occupied while I wait for my steering head bearings. ;D
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

The pics are a little out of focus but it could be that they have been painted in a hammertone finish, it would give a textured finish

the po must have painted them, just get to work with some wet and dry sand paper in some water with dishwashing liquid.
start of with 600 then work your way up from there to 1200 then some polish to finish them off.

Cheers guys, will deal to them tomorrow, they truely are ugly.
I didn't think Poppa Honda would have done that to them and if he had I'm sure the paint would have been heat resistant! ;D

Amazing what an hour sitting in the sun with some wet & dry paper can achieve.
Check out the before and after shots.
Mind you I had to listen to 30 Harleys barrelling off somewhere for a day out and I know that the Ulysses Club had a run today down to Waipukurau.
Anyhow thanks for the tips guys and I didn't cheat although the thought of using Jaffas' electric sander did cross my mind.
I've still got the stator cover and the gear change/sprocket cover to do so if those bearings and floats don't arrive tomorrow I'll tackle them..........cheers.....Hush.
