550 Airbox idea...
« on: August 15, 2006, 04:30:51 PM »
I'm not too sure how will this go over or if its just a ridiculous idea, but here goes.
I was thinking of attaching a K&N cone filter from a car to the airbox attachment that connects on to the carbs.
I thought that this might give me more air while retaining some of the stability flow that is associated to pods or stacks.
Let me know what you think.

I've seen that done, but don't have any first hand knowledge
of how well it operates.

OH CRAP! Here it comes! Act nonchalant!

Us? talking about modifying air boxes? No sir, that wasn't us!

Well due to the inherent problems with pods and stacks - I was thinking this may work.
Plus, I'm looking at relocating my battery and fuse box so you can see through.

I just don't want to spend more time fooling around and tuning pods/stacks than riding.
Are they (pods/stacks) something that needs constant tuning?
Or are they quite reliable once set?

Don't mean to open a can of worms....

The idea of the pods and volocity stacks is to be out in the open where they can draw more easily plus the air travel distance is shortened quite a bit=better air flow.

on the 550s at least, the connectors from the airbox to the carbs seem actually have a slight taper to them, potentially creating a venturi effect as the air flows from the airbox to the carbs, kind of like little velocity stacks. i'm no engineer, and certainly no flow expert, but i've seen this argued in better detail. i always thought that the stock filter itself was a big part of the restriction issue.

i have pods because they make the carbs so goddamn easy to get off and on, but i really believe that the "better" air flow is probably not actually better. i say go for the suggsted mod and let us know how your plugs read.

My partsguy tells me he's never seen any pods that fit a 550f without modification, because they touch the frame. Is this true for K&N filters as well because a lot of you seem to have those.
Can somebody give me an estimated difference in performance compared to stock filter?
Do I have to rejet, or can I run different plugs only?

You'll have to re-jet.  I've seen shorter K&N pods that will fit.  The standard shaped cone ones will hit the frame I believe.

i run short foam pod filters on mine. bought them from speedmoto.com, and he knew which ones were the only ones that would fit. they're black foam with chrome ends.

Here's what I've done, K&N is from an 1100 Suzuki. Removed stock rear airbox and there is plenty of room between electrical panel & battery box. Also eases carb removal. Will definitely flow more air than original filter but hopefully without some of the problems associated with pods (peace pod lovers!)

looks like a follow up to an old post.  That's exactly what I did to my 350F.  No rejetting necessary.  It runs great.

(don't mind the dangling wiring harness...it's been tucked back up)

How exactly does that work getting rid of the battery and electrical?

From what I've heard the battery and the electrical panel are moved under the seat, usually w/ a gel type battery since they're smaller.  Benji Flipperboi sells kits to do it all.
