anubis: the '75 cb750a bobber project
« on: July 22, 2006, 10:03:54 PM »
some new pics of the ever continuing project known as anubis.
i installed the 10 degree chrome aftermarket triple trees today to check the fit and the feel of the front end with the cb650 front forks.
i think it'll be fine.
still have to decide if there's some way to marry the 19" spoked wheel to the 650's more modern brakes.

p.s.  found out today:
in a pinch, the oem lower triple tree clamp bolts are the same size as the lower rear shock bolts.
just not chrome.

I like it. Is the sparkle tank staying or going?

        crowboy,

It's quite unusual to see a 750A used in a project. You just might have done a first!
You've got a cool look going there. I believe you could use a 650 or an early 80's 750 spoke front
wheel with that front end. My 80' CB750 ha the same basic brake caliper setup. I'm not positive
though so, maybe somebody will kick in and give some additional info here. I do know that a 650
wheel will bolt up to a 550 fork but, then I have the same caliper mount issue you do. I'm going
to swap to 650 fork tube/leg assemblies. Like to have some details on the bike. Pictures are good
and like I said, you've got a really cool look going there. Keep up the good work and I'll catch you
        later on.      Bill

no need to be offended, i'm afraid this project (and my use of anubis as a service mark) predates you about three years or so.

i'm 50/50 on it right now.
i have a spare K tank laying around, but i'm becoming fond of the peanut, it's height and the way it exposes the frame line.
especially because i'm going to cut the frame in the battery box area and drop that rail about 3-4 inches and put in a solo seat at the height of the original frame line.
i keep tossing back and forth on whether to keep the sparkly gel coat, it's a little cooler in person than it looks.
unfortunately the raked trees dont have any steering stops and when i was tightening the head nut on the steering i put a pea sized chip in the gel all the way down to the white stuff. i dunno.

bill:

do you know whether the 650 spoked front wheel is a 19 incher?
if it is i think that would be the quickest route for me, as i already have the caliper/hoses/switches. i just need a wheel and disc that fits these forks and is at least 19"

i'm also adding floorboards to this project. i'm gonna be pretty wide across the tranny with this bike.
i want this project to be wide and low, like a old hydra-glide bobber.
aside from the horrendous vibration, my biggest complaint with h-d is the bikes are too damned skinny. i don't like getting on a motorcycle and feeling like i've just plopped down on a 60 horse schwinn...

in case anybody is wondering i have no idea who makes the chrome tree. got it from ebay and there's absolutely no identifying marks on it. very heavy all steel part with at least double chrome on it. with the 19 inch tire and the cb650 forks i'm at about 3/4" to maybe 1" of trail so it should still steer fairly neutral.

also, don't use a cheap screw driver as your leverage when tightening the axle down. mine shattered in my hand and cut all the way down to the muscle.
yum.

crowboy, According to my source which is crotchrocket.com , the 80'-82' CB650 has a 19" spoke front wheel. The 79' had a 19" Comstar rim. That should make things easier, provided you can some up with a wheel for a reasonable price. Happy hunting and keep us posted.                                                      Later on, Bill

i got the trees from ebay, like $35, no markings.
i'm using them with early 80's CB650 forks, the bike is pretty light now and ain't to much goin' back on.
the angle means less action on the forks, so that stiffens them up too.
i don't think i'd use them with longer forks as it looks like the rake would send the trail negative in short order and you'd spend all day trying to hold the wheel upright.

the bike is a cut down '75 K frame with a '76 auto motor, drag pipes and fiberglass peanut tank.
the tank has a metal filler neck that was 'glassed in. the bugger is so tight it requires 2 dry hands and a bit of down force to open. two old brass petcocks, one on each side. and no rust.  ;D

i've got a solo seat from an old riding mower coming from ebay.
roadstar mini floorboards, a completely bleached master cylinder, and some big old longhorn handlebars with fat grips.

also, don't use a cheap screw driver as your leverage when tightening the axle down. mine shattered in my hand and cut all the way down to the muscle.
yum.

How did you get the photos in the first post to come up fullsize?   ???

The board software normally shrinks images. >:(

yeah?
hella i know.

i do know that the board was being soopa funky when i tried to start this thread.
my browser jus kept loadin' and loadin'
i accidentally posted this thread three times and had to delete two of them.
maybe i hit it during maintenence or sumptin'?

confirmed that the 1981 CB650 front wheel should be a beauty of a match.
i ran across a guy who was selling his '81 and checked out the front spoked wheel, nice and light looking inner spool!
bike seems clean (not super, but reasonable) and his buddy drove it in from garretsville, which is about 45 min from cleveland.
no affiliation with the seller but if anybody wants to get in touch with him i can find out his number.

I don't know if anyone else did, but I sent him a PM to see if everything was okay with him and if his wound had healed up okay. I also mentioned that we'd sure like to see more on that Anubis Build. If he responds directly to me, instead of here, I'll let you all know. Hope he's okay and he'll be finishing this one up with pictures.

hey bill et. al.!

i'm back from the dead (at least that's the excuse i'm claiming for the smell...)

i finally remembered my user name and password.

seriously.

the hand healed well enough, but anubis still waits in the sarcophagus.

'fraid i was broke for a long time and these days i got so much work and family i can barely get to wrenching on the rambler let alone fabrication work. i think i'm going to turn the frame work over to my welding friend just to give him something to do though...

now if i could get the missus to stop working on her stupid '70 triumph bonneville and get to working on my honda.... :P

Hey crowboy, good to hear from you and am glad your hand healed up too. That looked nasty. Also glad to hear that things are looking up for you financially and all. ;)

I've got a 77' 750A myself. It'll probably stay stock for now, I'm just trying to get the time and workspace to get it going. Very interested in what you are doing with that one though. 8) ;)

BTW, "Good Luck" on getting your missus to work on the Honda! :D

                                    Take care, Bill ;)
